Sequoyah doing things to
get back on winning track
By Anna Snyder
Tribune Sports Writer
Be elite and do the work.
That is what coach James Teter
is telling his team this year as he
enters his 13th season with the
Chiefs.
“Excellence, love, integrity, teamwork
and effort,” Teter said. “That’s
what elite stands for.”
After finishing 4-6 last year,
Sequoyah is ready to turn things
around. The Chiefs had a late run,
winning four out of the last five
games of the season, which has led
to a great off-season on the field
and in the weight room.
“It’s looking good,” Teter said. “I
mean, we’re young obviously. Last
year, we started four ninth graders
on defense and seven sophomores
on offense, so we’re really young.
But, we’re hoping that the experience
they got last year will pay off.”
Teter said he is also hoping a
sense of normalcy will help his
team this year.
“We had coaches last year who
all through June and July never
met the kids that they were coaching
until the first day of practice,
because you were in those pods,”
he said. “That was just bad. Then
to be able to do some of the stuff
we’re doing this summer, back to
doing 7-on-7s and camps (is great).”
The Chiefs also have seven new
coaching additions they added to
the staff.
Breon Isaac, Brian Balsmeyer,
Kevin Bannister and former
Woodstock coach Brent Budde are
the new coaches on the defensive
side of the ball, while JJ Cantrell,
Joe Hulen and Ben Jacqmein are
the newest coaching additions to
the offense.
At 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, Matthew
Traynor will be returning as quarterback.
The rising junior threw for
700 yards and nine touchdowns
last season.
The Chiefs will have to deal with
losing running back Jaden Mitchell
who led them in rushing the past
two seasons. Teter said there are
about six players competing to
fill the role. Senior Peyton Lucas,
who ran for 219 yards on 32 carries,
will be returning as fullback.
On the defensive side of the ball,
things are going to change. Budde,
the new defensive coordinator, is
switching the team from its former
4-3 system to a multiple 3-4
system.
The Chiefs will have to fill holes
at linebacker, where they lost graduating
seniors Jonah Haney and
Joseph Silva, who combined for
87 tackles and 21 tackles for loss
last season.
Teter said defensive line returners
Avery Born (senior) and Harrison
Hood (senior) will be staples
of coach Budde’s new system. The
duo combined for 66 tackles and
17 tackles for loss in 2020.
Sequoyah is no stranger to change,
and Teter said the team’s performance
this season will come down
to how they deal with the change.
“The expectations will be the
same as every year,” Teter said.
“We’re going to try to compete for
more and more spots and have
a chance, it will just come down
to how they handle adversity. At
some point there’ll be something
and if they bounce back from it
and handle that well, they will be
successful. If they don’t, then it
can be rough.”
