Leadership to carry Eagles
in year’s second season
By Christian Knox
MDJ Sports Writer
After going 9-3 and advancing to
the NAIA Football National Championship
Series in 2019, Reinhardt
coach James Miller was forced to
make some changes to his winning
offseason formula when the
the coronavirus forced the NAIA
to move its 2020 regular season
to the spring of 2021.
New social distancing measures
meant the Eagles had to prepare
for the spring season while working
out in small groups and meeting
over Zoom. They were still hit hard
multiple times by the pandemic
when over 30 Eagles, including
Miller, contracted the virus, but
that did not stop Reinhardt from
reaching the quarterfinals following
an undefeated season.
“We continued to adapt to and
overcome every obstacle that was
thrown to us,” Miller said. “When
we got into the playoffs, we had
two kids test positive in back-toback
games, and we lost defensive
backs in back-to-back games.”
After a season that required the
Eagles to lock in to overcome the
added obstacle of the pandemic,
Miller said he failed to get his
team mentally ready for the third
round of the playoffs, leading to a
season-ending 42-14 loss to Keiser.
“When you get into playoffs, everybody’s
got great football teams.
We’ve got to come with our absolute
best game every single day,”
Miller said. “It depends on our
leadership from our players, it’s
depends on our leadership from
our coaches and it’s going to depend
on the leadership from me,
making sure that we don’t let that
happen and we come ready to go
every single week.”
Quarterback Billy Hall will attempt
to build on his All-American
2021 spring season while running
Miller’s no-huddle, run-heavy offense
again this season.
“What we want to do first and
foremost is run the ball, and then
try to play action and hit you over
top with our guys on the outside,”
Miller said.
A-back Dylan Kelly and B-back
Isaiah Blake will be called on again
to move the ball and score out of
the backfield, while 2021 spring
season team receiving leader Navarie
Soloman will attack down
the field. John Cano, Sam Hill,
Jake Brock and Chris Cuffee are
all back along the offensive line
this season.
Middle linebacker Bryce Atchison
is the only new starter in Reinhardt’s
4-2-5 defense, but returning
linebacker Kenneth Lowery
will be there to help Atchison get
in sync with the rest of the defense.
Defensive end Teon Burroughs,
a 2021 spring All-American, will
once again be a leader on the defensive
line.
“I think we’ve had All-American
linemen for four straight years,” Miller
said. “We’ve been deep upfront over
the years, and we like to rotate those
guys a lot, and we like to wreck havoc
with those guys up front and create as
much pressure as possible.”
Jacorris Lamar and Malik Brown
will return as man-to-man, pressheavy
cornerbacks, while Kellen
Neal will cover deep as the Eagles’
free safety. Jalen Everett will play
dog, a linebacker-defensive back
hybrid, while Key Whitlock rounds
out the starting covermen at rover.
