Bohannon changing
positions; ready to
change Etowah’s fate
By Michael Doti
Tribune Sports Writer
Etowah quarterback Braden
Bohannon enters his senior season
with aspirations.
After being named the
expected starter for the
upcoming season, he said
he wants to show people
Etowah is not the same
team as the one who went
1-9 last year.
At the same time, he said
he eventually wants to be the
third Bohannon in the Kennesaw
State football program.
His father Brian has been the
coach of the Owls since 2013,
and has built the program into
one of the Football Championship
Subdivision’s best.
Blake Bohannon, Braden’s
older brother, started
at wide receiver the past
two seasons at Etowah,
was a key special teams
player and also shined
on defense.
He had 38 tackles, one forced
fumble and one interception
at outside linebacker. It was
enough to earn him a second
team spot on the All-Region
5AAAAAAA defense and
a spot as a preferred walk-on
wide receiver at KSU.
Braden also played wide receiver
alongside his brother last
year before coach Matt Kemper
decided to move him to quarterback.
He caught five passes
for 55 yards, but Kemper said
he wanted to build the offense
around his ability to make plays
with his legs.
Kemper said he is proud
of Bohannon and he has matured
a lot as a senior. He
said he is fast, tough to tackle
and brings all the intangible
qualities to the table.
“If that guy was wrestling
a bear, I’d be somewhat concerned
about the bear,” Kemper
said. “He goes out and
he competes and he makes
the others around him better,
and he just wants to win
and it goes a long way.”
Bohannon said his father
helped him with his playmaking
abilities.
“He helps me a lot. Last year
we were trying to run the triple
option, so he helped me
with that a little bit,” Bohannon
said. “He just helps me
with more of the mental stuff
about it and tries to stay out of
all this stuff.”
Brian Bohannon said while
he did help his son with the triple
option and his footwork,
many of the conversations the
two had were talking about
taking ownership and leading
the team.
“He understands what it means
to be the quarterback,” Brian
Bohannon said. “He’s not afraid
to lead and he’s not afraid to
say what he means.”
It is something Kemper said
he has already seen leading
up to the season’s opening
game.
“He brings that leadership
role to the offense,” he said.
Braden Bohannon said he is
unsure about where he would
like to go, but it would mean
a lot to him to play football at
Kennesaw State.
He did say that he narrowed
it down to three schools. If it’s
not Kennesaw State, he said he
would like to play football at
either Army or Navy, and potentially
join the military after
graduation.
Right now, Bohannon said
he is focusing on his senior
season at Etowah, and it starts
with trying to win more than
one game.
“(We) really need to just play
every game as hard as we can,
and the outcome will be what
we want to,” Bohannon said.
“We’re a completely different
team this year.”
