Marietta out to prove 2020
was just a speed bump
By Christian Knox
MDJ Sports Writer
Numerous Marietta players went
on to play Division I football after
leading the Blue Devils to a state
title in 2019, leaving the 2020 roster
low on experience.
The result was a 3-8 season.
While Marietta may not have
had experience last season, the
Blue Devils flashed plenty of potential.
This year, coach Richard
Morgan said he hopes experience
is a strength for his team.
“Last year we were breaking in 20
new starters,” he said. “We returned
20 starters this year, so obviously that
experience of playing that grind of a
schedule, making the playoffs and
being able to get all that experience,
I think we just go up from there and
it just helps us. Twenty starters coming
back is a whole lot of familiarity
with everything going on.”
Coming off a three-win season,
Morgan said the goal is still to win
every game they play in. As the
locker room continues to look more
like the 2019 roster, Morgan’s goal
seems to become more realistic.
Tyler Hughes, who committed
to Southern University in July, will
be back to lead the high-powered
pro-style spread offense after leading
Cobb County in passing with
2,703 yards and 28 passing touchdowns.
The dual-threat passer
also led the team in rushing with
535 yards and eight touchdowns.
Luke Morgan will join a receiving
core that will feature 2021 playmakers
Zuri Johnson, Christian
Mathis, Camden Overton, Kamryn
Perry and Daniel Martin, who
took a combined 178 catches for
2,859 yards and 31 touchdowns.
“I think we’ve probably led the
area in passing for the last four
years. Obviously our passing game
is something that we feel good
about,” Morgan said.
The Blue Devils have played in a
3-4 scheme on defense, but this year
Morgan is adding an extra safety in
place of a defensive end in the 3-3-
5 scheme he is implementing. Milon
Jones will play a critical role in
Morgan’s new scheme as the first
to fill the new safety role.
“It gives us a guy that’s not in the
blocking scheme,” Morgan said on
the new position. “We can do some
different things with (Jones) at safety,
bring him down to the box as a
linebacker and also be able to have
him be able to do some different
things sideline to sideline.”
Jah’vaughn Hamilton and Devion
Hall will fill the other two safety
spots, while Jace Arnold, Devin
Clark and Isaiah Sanders will see
playing time at cornerback.
Ezekiel Durham-Campbell and
Emmanuel Olaitan, who led Marietta
in sacks with six last season,
will be back on the defensive line
alongside Broderick Tommie. Linebacker
was a position of strength last
season, and Daniel Martin, Carlos
Cervantes and Ellis Reed are back
after combining for 202 tackles.
“When you only return two starters
to a defense and you can’t work
with them until almost July because
of the (coronavirus) situation
last year, it’s hard to build
that defense up,” Morgan said. “I
think the fact that we have that
experience now, the kids know
what to expect. They’re a year older,
they’re more mature, they’re
stronger than they were, they’re
faster than they were.
