Whitefield Academy brings
back experience for 2021
By Michael Doti
MDJ Sports Writer
Whitefield Academy had to overcome
numerous challenges during
the 2020 season. In addition to
having to deal with COVID-19 protocols,
the Wolfpack had to overcome
injuries, along with having
to adjust to a new group of rivals
in Region 2A Private.
After a 5-4 regular season,
Whitefield won its first playoff
game in three years, defeating
Savannah Country Day 27-21.
Its season ended in the second
round to the eventual state runner
up Trinity Christian.
The Wolfpack lost ony three
seniors to graduation. Coach
Coleman Joiner said he is excited
to bring the majority of his team
back again for 2021.
However, missing from last year’s
squad will be two of the region’s
best players in wide receiver Myles
Redding, who led the county with
1,113 yards receiving and was named
the region player of the year, and
leading rusher Eric Little. Joiner
said it will be a battle for the new
starter position at running back.
“We’ve got some really good guys
in that group. Caleb Lavallee got a lot
of snaps last year, and Howard Allen
played slot receiver but he’s moving to
running back, so those two guys will
anchor a deep group that are competing
for reps and carries,” Joiner said.
Ayden Duncanson will return at
quarterback. He was lost at midseason
to injury, finishing with
866 yards and eight touchdowns.
Cole Peterson, who took over in
the season’s second half, threw for
955 yards and five touchdowns,
earning second team all-region
honors.
The wide receiver group is also
trying to fill the void of Redding’s
absence. Joiner said Cooper Craig
will likely be the new leader of that
group. Last year he was second on
the team in receiving yards with 275.
Joiner said he also wants to see
more from guys like Ian Weihe,
Jonathan Johnson and tight end
Charlie Baxter.
The offensive and defensive
lines return intact, including dual
threat and first-team all-region
player Ian Geffrard. Joiner said
being experienced at those positions
is a huge advantage.
Ten members of the defense
return, and although Duncanson
saw a lot of time at quarterback,
he was a first-team all
region player at defensive back
grabbing six interceptions in only
half a season. Lavallee will lead
the defense after posting 138
tackles and six sacks a year ago.
With Our Lady of Mercy playing
a non-region schedule this year,
Whitefield Academy is left with
only two region games in 2021.
While that means the team is
guaranteed to make the playoffs,
Joiner said he wants to make sure
his team is ready every week.
“We want to be highly competitive
every week. We want to
teach our guys to do really hard
things and to embrace those opportunities.
We know we have a
tough schedule and we’re excited
about that,” Joiner said. “We don’t
think hard games are bad games,
we think hard games and tough
opponents are great opportunities
to grow and to prepare for
playoff runs and to compete for
region championships.”
