Hanson trying to create
something special with Eagles
By Gabriel Kahaian
MDJ Sports Writer
In early February, South Cobb
announced former Harrison assistant
coach Thomas Hanson as
the new head coach for the 2021
season.
Hanson was the defensive line
coach with the Hoyas, where he
helped the program win the 2019
Class AAAAAA state championship.
Throughout his 24 years of
coaching, Hanson has helped
build numerous successful programs,
which is something he
said he is looking to replicate
with the Eagles.
“I know my experience has culminated
into an understanding of how
to run an effective program,” Hanson
said. “It just came to the point
where I knew I needed to try it out.”
It is another new beginning for
the Eagles of South Cobb, with there
being five head coaches within the
past 10 years. However, Hanson
said he is going to implement a
program that breeds success inside
and outside the locker room.
Over the last four years, he said
he was creating a program manual
that highlights the philosophies
and standards that he would hold
for his team. Every player receives
a copy so there is clear communication
of what is expected.
“It goes through a step-by-step
guide of how we are going to get
stuff done,” Hanson said. “It goes
over our game plan and what is
expected of our players. There is
a standard that the coaching staff
and I set, and we are not going to
deviate from that.”
Hanson inherited a South Cobb
team that has had back-to-back 1-9
seasons. Right away, he installed
an air raid system for his offense,
focusing on retooling the Eagles’
passing game.
“We really want to focus on the
pass, because then it will enable
us to open up lanes for our backs,”
Hanson said. “We have our quarterbacks
throwing around 400
balls a day.”
Hanson said sophomore Javon
Clark is the expected starter this
season. As a freshman, he threw
for 214 yards and rushed for 208.
While still developing, Clark has
quickly earned his coaches’ trust
during offseason training.
“He is just the complete package,”
Hanson said. “He is developing
into a vocal leader and is
going to be an impact player on
our offense.”
Joining Clark in the backfield
is senior running back Johnathan
Simmons. Simmons led the
team with 405 rushing yards and
five touchdowns last season. He is
someone Hanson is really excited
about utilizing in the offense.
Hanson plans to implement a
3-4 defensive scheme and to focus
on adding a lot of movement.
He said the focus is to make the
opposing offense uncomfortable.
“I want the kids to be fundamentally
sound, but to also play like hair
is on fire every play,” Hanson said.
The defense will be led by seniors
Nyheim Jean and twins Uchenna
and Ugonna Nwoha. The three
seniors are members of the front
seven and are committed to stopping
their opponents.
Hanson said there is work to
be done at South Cobb. However,
with some patience, there is going
to be something special in Austell.
