Campbell wants to continue
progress with fast start
By Christian Knox
MDJ Sports Writer
Campbell made progress in its
second season under coach Howie
DeCristofaro, finishing 2-8 in
2020 after going winless in 2019.
This season, DeCristofaro wants
his team to start strong so the
Spartans can build momentum
as the season wears on.
“Our goal right now is to be focused
on Week 1. That’s our focus,”
DeCristofaro said. “There’s an old
saying that success breeds success.
If we win the first one, then we go
from there to the second one. The
more you win, the more the kids
have confidence in themselves, and
therefore they feel better when they
get out there on the field.”
Campbell will attempt to win
its first region game since 2017,
and climb the ranks of Region
2AAAAAAA by pounding opponents
at the line of scrimmage
behind tackles Trevion Florence
and Kevron McCloud.
“If we can play good up front,
we have a chance this year,” De-
Cristofaro said. “Our O-line is so
big and strong that I think we can
run the ball effectively, and then
when they put the extra guy in the
box, I think we can throw the ball.”
Center Jordan Dobson will
be snapping to a first year signal
caller this season, as Jaylen
Bester and Luke Marble have
been locked in a quarterback
competition in the offseason.
After former cornerback Mark
Anthony Swain was forced to
switch to quarterback for much
of last season, DeCristofaro will
look to reinvigorate his passing
attack by introducing more runpass
option plays in 2021.
“On offense the quarterback is
going to be huge for us,” DeCristofaro
said. “The running back
Jo Phillips I think played every
game last year, and he’s 10 pounds
heavier (at 200) and a whole lot
stronger. Remier Smith on the
outside and Ryan Ray, our two
outside receivers, are both tall.
They’re both 6-foot-3.”
In addition to Smith and Ray,
Malachi Jackson will line up in
the slot. Jackson Williams will
be an extra impact blocker in
the physical run game as this
season’s starting H-back.
“We’re basing everything out of
20 personnel,” DeCristofaro said.
“Campbell has a leg up because the
defense is able to practice against
20 personel and RPO offense,
which other teams in-region run.
Campbell’s 3-4 defense runs through
the defensive line. Amare Henderson
and Onyebuchi Elukeme will play
defensive end, while Devon Farmer
and Grant Fielder will line up in
inside techniques to free linebackers
Jamison Bodner, Ethan Wiley
and Brandon Shelton.
“I think our front four is going
to be very good,” DeCristofaro
said. “Defensively, I think Brandon
Shelton is gonna be huge
for us. He didn’t play last year
because of the COVID, so he’s
back and he’s just making tackles
sideline to sideline.”
