Greyhounds hungry for return
to winning ways, postseason
By Adam Carrington
MDJ Sports Correspondent
Pope is entering the 2021 season
with a chip on its shoulder.
The Greyhounds were on the
cusp of making the Class AAAAAA
state playoffs a year ago and in a
second-place tie with Kell in Region
6AAAAAA with only one loss. Heading
into the regular season finale, a
positive COVID-19 test forced them
to cancel games against Sprayberry
and Kennesaw Mountain and
after falling to Kell head-to-head,
they were leapfrogged by the Yellow
Jackets and the Mustangs for
the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds.
With nine defensive starters returning
this season, Pope is hungry
for a postseason return.
“I think we have some good guys
coming back,” Pope coach Tab Griffin
said. “I think we have a chance,
barring any injuries. We’re really
athletic. We’re not one of the fastest
teams but one of the most athletic
teams. We’ll be bigger up front on
both sides than we have been in a
long time.”
Seniors Cheikh Koita (6-foot-2,
285-pounds) and defensive end
Luke Brunson are heading Pope’s
defensive front. The remaining
positions on the line are rotational
with Seniors Brian Bowman,
Dax Heinrich and junior Xavier
Holland getting snaps.
Meanwhile, senior Adam Jump
is shifting from defensive line to
linebacker
“He’s big, physical and strong, and
last year, we had him at defensive
end because we needed a defensive
end there,” Griffin said. “He’s more
suitable at linebacker.”
Senior returning starters Piers
Cameron and Bo Hosack are expected
to line up alongside Jump.
Pope will have all four of its starters
returning at defensive back in
Chewy Chiriboga, Marcus Alterman,
Boozer Downs and Phil Sims.
“We’ll have to lean on our defense
early,” Griffin said. “They
know the speed of varsity football.
They’re athletic and a smart bunch.
They don’t put themselves in bad
situations.”
While Pope only has four returning
starters on offense, it does have
varsity experience.
Junior Patrick Lowe and freshman
Kaeden Gilstrap are competing
to replace Peyton Cariaco at quarterback.
Both have different styles
with Lowe being solid in the pocket
and Gilstrap a dual threat.
After graduating standout
running back Joe Stellmach,
Hosack and Sims will likely split
duties in the backfield. Junior
Kris Hayes also brings speed to
the position.
Senior receiver Joel Brock has
elevated to starter after backing
up Jasper Merriman last season.
Junior Sosuke Watanabe is expected
to be in the mix alongside
junior Logan Rapp.
Senior Nick Givens is back at
tight end after starting last season.
Senior offensive tackle Brian
Baumann, offensive guard Patrick
Astorga and Heinrich at center are
also returning starters.
