100 Whitlock Avenue, Marietta - One block from the historic Marietta Square
of COVID-19 around the county is depth. Unlike Williams’
experience at Creekview, many coaches agreed with Teter
and found more opportunities being created. For Whitefield
Academy coach Coleman Joiner, the pandemic
brought new ways to grow his team and create depth.
“We had to learn how to prepare more guys to play,” Joiner
said. “Before the pandemic we had a tendency to hoard reps
for the starters or older guys. Now, whether it was because of
contact tracing or whatever, we learned how to get a lot of the
younger guys involved. That type of thing really increased our
depth and has changed us for the better.”
Other coaches, like Caleb Carmean at Kennesaw
Mountain, found that the use of technology made things
a lot easier moving forward. The ability to meet online
cut out excuses and travel time leading to more efficient
meetings.
“The biggest thing we took away from (the pandemic)
was integrating technology into meetings,”
Carmean said. “That is going to kind of carry over
into this year because it can kind of eliminate some
of the excuses or reasons behind kids not making
it to meetings. All they have to do is get on their
phones so it’s a heck of a lot easier.”
No matter how teams have adapted to the pandemic,
efficiency has become key. Adapting and finding what
works the best is the hard part.
“Football is all about adversity. Last year was a great example
of how to handle adversity,” Carmean said. “When
you cut out a lot of the outside noise and distractions you
can really focus on what you need to do to be successful.”
