own. Both Williams and Teter
talked about getting the young
guys prepared and keeping their
team strong. Workouts at home
posed problems of their own and
the coaches had to adjust.
“What hurt us a lot was our ability
to maintain strength,” Teter
said. “We are just getting back to
where we should have been last
January. Some kids had no access
to weights and even when we
got back to campus in pods it was
just different than lifting with the
whole team.”
The lack of practice on campus
was a common problem for a
team to overcome. Williams said
keeping strength was an issue but
even more importantly the ability
to develop the youth on the team
took a hit last year.
“One of the things we were not
able to accomplish was getting
those young guys ready to play
on Friday nights,” Williams said.
“Not having a spring practice or
a normal summer really showed
last year.”
Teter found the opposite to be
true for his team. Before the pandemic
he said Sequoyah was, for
the most part, a one sided team.
They had most players playing
both ways and were not able to
find playing time for the younger
ones. The pandemic changed that.
“Before the pandemic we were
a one platoon team. We had a
bunch of guys playing both ways,”
Teter said. “As a staff we sat down
and said we are going to have to
be more of a two platoon team.
We still have a few kids that go
both ways but for the most part
we identified a set position for
one kid to play on one side of the
ball. The switch has really added
to our depth.”
Adapting to these barriers across
the area has created more positives
than many coaches expected.
Some of the adaptations and
changes made to programs will
stick around for much longer than
the pandemic.
