Kell primed for another playoff
run behind retooled offense
By Adam Carrington
MDJ Sports Correspondent
Kell is returning only four starters
on offense, and while that may
not sound like a road to success,
those players are coming back in
key positions.
Three of them will help anchor
the offensive line and open up
holes for the other returning starter
in junior running back David
Mbadinga.
Mbadinga won the starting
position early his freshman year
and rushed for 1,200 yards. He
had a difficult sophomore year,
and was limited to 384 yards and
six touchdowns, mostly due to
injuries, but he is expected to be
at 100% going into the season.
It will be up to senior Kip
Henley and junior Zury Henry
along with senior Austin Duffy
to block for him, as well as upand
coming players at the skill
positions.
“Our experience comes up front,
and it’s really a good thing,” coach
Brett Sloan said. “We have talented
young guys at the skill positions.
Mbadinga continues to
grow and develop and continues
to be the player he has been. He
was injury-prone last year but is
healthy again. We’re excited to have
a healthy David Mbadinga back.”
The Longhorns finished with a
6-4 record in a COVID-19-shortened
season last year, good enough
to qualify for the Class AAAAAA
state playoffs. To make a deeper
playoff run, Sloan said they will
need the other skill players in offense
to step up right way, despite
having limited varsity experience.
Junior Davion Hampton, who
threw for 226 yards and three touchdowns
last season, will take over at
quarterback following Corbin La-
France’s graduation. He can keep
defenses off balance with both his
arms and his feet. Hampton got
limited playing as a sophomore,
and included a start against Blessed
Trinity.
Senior receiver Elijah White
could be his go-to receiver after
having a solid off season. Junior
Darius Dye is expected to be in
the mix as well as sophomore
Justin Logan.
“Our young guys won’t be young
guys anymore,” Sloan said. “If we
can be good on defense and get the
run game going, we have a chance
to be a good football team.”
On defense, that’s where the
experience lies with seven returning
starters.
Junior Josh Barker started all
10 games last season, finished
with 59 tackles and 7.5 sacks, and
is the veteran leader of the defensive
line. Sloan said Donavan
Ruredzo is expected to get playing
time up front, while Henley and
other younger players will vie for
time at defensive end.
Senior outside linebacker Quintin
Buckley is returning after earning
all-region honors a year ago. Junior
Brody James will also contribute,
and senior T.J. Felix is moving to
linebacker from the defensive line.
Senior DeAndre Creary is expected
to anchor the secondary
after coming away with six interceptions
last year, and junior
Ayden Jackson also returns at
corner. Junior Charles McCartherens
should get more playing
time at safety along with fellow
junior Ryan Barrett.
