Big offensive changes coming
at North Cobb Christian
By Gabriel Kahaian
MDJ Sports Writer
North Cobb Christian’s offense
will get a new look this year as
former Lanier offensive coordinator
Matt Jones was named the
Eagles’ coach earlier this May.
Jones takes over the program
from Mark Hollars who left to take
the same position at Commerce.
Hollars’ signature triple-option offense
led North Cobb Christian to
three straight playoff appearances,
including a visit to the quarterfinals
in 2018, but with a changing of the
guard comes a new style of play.
Jones, who runs a spread offense,
was 30-16 as offensive
coordinator at Lanier, including
three trips to the playoffs.
He said his 18 years in coaching
has prepared him for his first
head coach opportunity.
“Each place that I have been, I
have taken so many nuggets and
kept them in the back of my head,”
Jones said. “I’ve grown from watching
so many other good coaches
and players. I have been a part
of some really good programs. It
has all prepared me for this one.”
The Eagles lost 20 seniors to
graduation. Jones said he expects
his schedule to be challenging,
and said his focus is on
the week ahead.
“It can be easy to get overwhelmed
with a tough schedule, but we are
going to take it week by week,”
Jones said. “We have kids that
are just hungry and competitive.
It doesn’t matter what we are up
against. We can conquer it. Every
week is a 1-0 mentality.”
Jones said the players were excited
to learn and play in a multiple
formation, spread offense.
“The kids bought in 100%. It’s
just the trick of figuring out what
works on the field,” he said.
With the seniors gone, Jones
said upcoming senior Caedan
Callahan, and juniors Jacob Cruz
and Gabe Fortson are the teams
vocal leaders on offense and defense.
Callahan and Fortson are a
part of the Eagles’ front seven and
are on the offensive line. Meanwhile,
Cruz plays linebacker and
lines up as a tight end.
Senior Luke Brock is the team’s
starting quarterback. Jones said
he will lead the spread offense
and look for opportunities to advance
his team down the field.
Junior Trey Priester, son of
former Clemson running back
Raymond Priester, is the team’s
main back. Jones said Priester
utilizes his speed and mobility to
move the chains for his offense.
Jones also said the defense is
going to be predicated on movement
and run on emotion and passion.
Impact players are going to
be junior linebacker Jadin Coates
and senior 6-foot-3, 330-pound
defensive lineman Denzel Alexandre
Louis who recently got a
Division I offer from Valparaiso.
Jones said the thing that stands
out the most about North Cobb
Christian as a whole is the comradery
and sense of community
that he sees everywhere he goes.
“(It) is a great family atmosphere,”
Jones said. “At bigger schools,
sometimes it is easy for kids to
get lost or feel lost. Each and every
member of our community feels
like they are a part of something
special. It’s something I wish that
every school was like.”
