DeShon era to return Hawks
to consistent winning ways
By Gabriel Kahaian
MDJ Sports Writer
This spring, Justin DeShon was
introduced as the new coach at
Hillgrove.
The announcement came after a
4-5 season saw the Hawks’ streak
of 10 straight playoff appearances
come to an end. He replaced former
coach Byron Slack after building the
program at Chapel Hill in Douglasville
into a playoff contender.
He took them to the playoffs three
times in the past five years. Within
those five years, Chapel Hill did not
have a losing season.
DeShon said his experience
throughout the years of being a
football player and coach have
prepared him to lead this team.
“Experience is the best teacher,”
DeShon said. “You find what works,
what doesn’t work. You know who
you are and how you want to do
things. If you surround yourself
with the right people, good things
will happen.”
DeShon said his main goal for
the season is to get Hillgrove back
to its winning tradition.
“Right now, we are trying to get
the program back on track and stabilize
it to what it was,” DeShon said.
“We are going to get back into the
playoffs, no matter what seed. We
are focusing on getting to the 11th,
12th, 13th game down the line.”
The Hawks are expected to run
a one-back offensive system out of
the shotgun, that is RPO based. Hillgrove
will do this through standout
sophomore quarterback Chase
McCravy.
DeShon said McCravy can hurt
you in the rushing and passing game,
relying on his legs to extend plays.
DeShon also said he is thrilled to
have such a versatile weapon for
his offense.
“We have a QB who is able to make
his own play,” DeShon said. “He is going
to push the ball down the field. We
are definitely going to take advantage
of the pass, and he is the guy we are
going to do it with. He has college
ball written all over him.”
McCravy has size and speed in the
receiving corps, including 6-foot-4
Isaiah Rodgers to make plays in the
red zone, and slot reciever Cameron
Loyd to get open in space.
McCravy should have plenty of
time to get rid of the ball behind
an offensive line that is anchored
by seniors center Kyle Kalminski,
guard Chance Morgan, and led by
6-4, 275-pound, left tackle Ruebens
Joseph.
The defense may be led by the
defensive backs. South Carolina
commit Emory Floyd is a fourstar
cornerback and is considered
one of the best athletes in
the state of Georgia.
Offenses will also have to maneuver
around junior safety Kyle
McKinney and junior linebacker
Zion Rutledge. DeShon said
that the team looks up to them
as leaders.
“Kyle and Zion are very vocal
with the guys,” DeShon said. “They
want to be leaders, and they work
like leaders. They are going to be
outstanding impact players.”
DeShon said he is excited to put
the product out on the field.
“We are extremely athletic on
both sides of the ball. We have kids
who can really run,” he said, “We
are working on getting stronger
everyday. Can’t wait for the season
to start.”
