Mixture of veterans and youth
welcome Hoff to Woodstock
By Anna Snyder
Tribune Sports Writer
First-year coach Troy Hoff said
he is ready to help turn the Woodstock
football program around.
“It’s a great community and a really
good school,” Hoff said. “And
then looking at the resources we
have in this community and the program
made this a desirable spot.”
Woodstock finished the 2020
season 3-7, and did not make it to
playoffs after a fifth place finish in
Region 5AAAAAAA.
The Wolverines haven’t had a
winning season since 2017, and
Hoff, who spent the last 16 years
at Eastside High School, said he
would like to turn things around
but he recognizes it will take time.
To make the necessary changes,
Hoff said he is focusing on daily
improvement and consistency.
“Everyone has goals of wins and
losses and where they want to go,
and we want to go to the playoffs,”
Hoff said. “We want to host Game 11
right here at the stadium, but there’s
a lot of things that go into that before
we get there, kind of the daily
approach, controlling those little
things and getting ready to compete.
“We’re looking at consistency.
Be the same guy every day, be a
reliable teammate.”
This season, Hoff said the team
is young overall, but there are some
experienced starters returning.
“The juniors and seniors, they’re
good core kids,” he said. “But they’re
a little smaller in numbers with class
sizes. The good part about that is that
there’s some kids in those classes
that have played a lot of football, so,
the guys in those classes have been
here and done that.”
Junior quarterback Dan Comeau,
who threw for 1,581 yards and 13
touchdowns last season, will be
returning under center.
The offensive line will be led by returning
veterans 6-foot-3, 267-pound
senior JT Hunter and 6-foot-5,
265-pound junior Tyler Douthit.
Senior Preston Lawrence, who
was an all-region player last year,
is a dual-threat playing offense and
defense. Last season at quarterback
he threw for 281 yards and
two touchdowns, ran for 145 yards
with three touchdowns, and then
turned around and played linebacker
where he had 35 tackles
and an interception.
Junior Carson Gray, who had 36
tackles, including 16 for loss and seven
sacks, and senior Benji Shackelford,
will be returning to the defense.
Hoff said his players are looking
forward to getting the season started,
and they are ready for things to be
back to normal after the COVID-19
pandemic affected last year.
“It was a very strange year,” Hoff
said. “I think it’s just the excitement
of the season, things getting back to
normal, them being able to be with
their teammates and a lot of little
things that people don’t exactly see
that they’re excited about.”
Hoff said he is already beginning
to see positive forces
take place.
“They’ve been working hard, they’ve
adjusted to change well,” Hoff said.
“I know that’s not always easy changing
the structure of things with new
coaches, new systems on offense
and defense and special teams, so
they’ve responded really really well.
We couldn’t be happier with them,
with their effort and attitude towards
all the changes.”
