Pebblebrook hopes to continue
to rise up region standings
By Michael Doti
MDJ Sports Writer
The 2021 Pebblebrook Falcons
believe they can improve
on last season.
Coach Leroy Hood said the
key is building team chemistry.
After the Falcons lost their season
opener to Peachtree Ridge last
year, they went on a five-game
winning streak. Things took a turn
in the second half of the season as
they only won once in their final
four regular season games and got
knocked out in the first round of
the playoffs by North Cobb.
The 6-5 season was an improvement
on the 3-7 season in 2019,
Hood’s first season with the team.
He said everyone has to keep improving
on what they’ve worked
on all offseason.
“(This is) the first time I’ve had
a full staff that didn’t have much
turnover, so the chemistry is there
as far as the coaches and we’re all
on the same page, and the kids are
on the same page,” Hood said.
“With that, I feel like we’re taking
tremendous strides right now,
which pretty much tells me what
kind of season we’re going to have
based on what we’ve done.”
Along with the coaching staff,
Hood said a lot of players are returning,
especially on offense.
Dual-threat quarterback Craig
Adams Jr., who threw for 1,045
yards and 15 touchdowns and
added 491 yards and five touchdowns
on the ground, will return
for his junior season. Joining
him will be senior running back
Travone Finney, who had nearly
500 yards rushing and three
touchdowns. Pebblebrook also
returns one of the top wide receivers
in the county in Dami’on
Thompson. The Coastal Carolina
commit caught 18 passes for
491 yards and nine touchdowns.
On defense, Hood said he liked
what he had seen from his defensive
linemen and linebackers.
John Floyd and Tyler Swann were
both members of the all-region
second team defense. Hood said
he is also excited to see Dontavious
Phillips and Brian Paul, two
defensive ends going into their
junior seasons.
Hood said there are two positions
that will need improvements
— offensive line and defensive back.
“I feel like those are two of the
most important positions on the
field — offensive line and defensive
backfield. We have the depth there,
but we don’t have the experience
that we had in the past,” Hood said.
He added the team lost four
starters on the offensive line and
three starters in the defensive
backfield, including first team
all-region player Trennon Mitchell.
Another area Hood highlighted
was special teams.
“We want to light it up more
in the special teams, as far as the
PATs, and we lost a couple games
due to missed field goals, botched
snaps, someone not blocking
when they were supposed to,”
Hood said. “We lost three games
by a combined eight points, so we
want to touch up on those little
things as far as special teams.”
Pebblebrook does have utility
player Dwight Phillips Jr. as their
kick returner. As a freshman last
year, he had three kickoff return
touchdowns and he was the region
specialist of the year.
