Salam’s job at Osborne is about
much more than football
By Gabriel Kahaian
MDJ Sports Writer
Luqman Salam waited a long time
to become a head coach.
After 14 years as a coordinator at
Hillgrove, he finally gets his chance
at Osborne starting with this season.
During his time at Hillgrove, the
Hawks went to the playoffs 11 times
and won four region titles.
Salam inherits a program that
hasn’t had a winning season since
1994. However, he said he is looking
forward to making an impact
on the community.
Being raised in the Smyrna area,
he said he couldn’t think of a better
place to be. To him, this is a lot more
than a job, but a chance to connect
with his hometown. He said he can
better relate to his players.
“What is great for me is I feel like
I share in the personal experience,”
Salam said. “I grew up in Windy
Hill. I know and lived through what
it is like to be a high school student
in the Cobb County, Smyrna area.
“I was looking for a place where I
could really pour into kids who needed
it. I wanted a place that had a future.
Osborne was the perfect fit for me.”
Over his time at Hillgrove, Salam
found plenty of success. He said that
he is looking to implement a winning
mentality from the start.
“Our program will be based on
hard work, dedication, and integrity,”
Salam said.
Although Osborne would benefit
from an increased roster size, Salam
said he was pleased with the Cardinals
in his locker room.
“Of course, we need more numbers,
and constituencies all around.
However, our players have the hard
working, dedicated mentally required
to succeed,” Salam said, “They have
high character, and each one wants
to get better.”
The program has nearly 30 sophomores
on the roster. Salam said this
group is going to have plenty of time
to develop and is looking forward to
growing the talent here.
This season, Osborne is poised
to have a balanced offensive attack
run through multiple impact players.
Senior quarterback Lawrence
Isham is looking to have the best
season of his career.
The Cardinals will also have
quarterback, wide receiver, and
secondary hybrid Armon Hornsby
at their disposal. Salam says
the sophomore excels at multiple
positions and has impressed
the coaching staff.
Osborne’s key skill players are
juniors Khalif Walters and Joshua
Horton. Walters will be the main
back for the Cardinals with Horton
being their main target threat.
The Cardinals will run a 4-2-5
defensive scheme focused around
getting as many bodies in front of
the line as possible.
“It is a good D for putting a number
of players in the box, making it easy to
stop the run,” Salam said. “It allows
us to stop lineman from getting down
field. It’ll help us cover up the box.”
The defensive leaders for the
team are defensive linemen senior
Elhadj Fall and sophomore Dayton
Wilson. Both of these players
use their voices to motivate their
teammates and will play a vital
part to establish a successful defensive
culture.
Salam wanted an opportunity
where he could be a part of something
bigger than football. Here at
Osborne, he found exactly that.
