Etowah set to leap forward;
get back to winning football
By Michael Doti
Tribune Sports Writer
Etowah is ready to take a big
step forward.
The Eagles are looking to
build off a 1-9 season in 2020,
which was their worst record
since 1985.
Second-year coach Matt Kemper
said the strength of this year’s
team will be the defensive line. Senior
Jaiden Maddox at 5-foot-9,
200-pounds should help that out.
Maddox had 32 total tackles
last season, including seven
for loss, which was second
on the team. That was enough
to make it on the second team
All-Region 5AAAAAAA defense.
Kemper also said he should
help the younger players as
they grow into their roles on
defense.
“Hopefully that’s a strength and
a force, and it needs to be because
we’re a little younger on the back
end after losing Lane Cantrell and
Austin Skinner, who were both
three-year starters at inside linebacker,”
he said. “So we need those
guys to do the work early on and
(I’m) excited to see them get to
play real football.”
One position that Kemper said
still needs some work is wide receiver.
He said the team lost a lot
of experience, including Braden
Bohannon, who is moving from
wide receiver to quarterback. He
said he hoped the unit gained more
experience during the summer’s
7-on-7s.
Etowah does have some young
talent at other positions. Offensive
lineman Tate Nelhms was second
team all-region as a freshman.
Kemper said that he is excited
about Nelhms’ future and he believes
that he could play football
at a Power 5 college.
Elijah Washington will be the
lead running back going into this
season. As a freshman, he got starting
time towards the end of the
season and ran for 218 yards and
a touchdown on 51 total carries.
Kemper said that he and the other
coaches liked what they saw
from him.
Overall, he is excited to
coach this team he has put
together.
“We just got great kids and
they’re fun to be around, they
work really hard and they want
to make you happy,” he said. “We
feel like we got a good (coaching)
staff and guys that like to
work together and like to be
around each other and that goes
a long, long way.”
Kemper said that the goal this
season is to win more games,
and added the team’s success
was hindered in 2020 by the
uncertainty of the pandemic.
In order to win more games
he said he and the rest of the
coaches need to work with the
players’ strengths.
One strength that was noticeable
throughout the spring was
the pursuit of his defense. Because
of that, defensive coordinator
Steve Sapere made T-shirts
with the catchphrase ‘TNT’ on
it, which stands for ‘Takes No
Talent.’
“Just run to the football and
be relentless and give great effort,”
Kemper said. “If your kids
do that, then let the score be
what it is.”
