Cassidy’s plan — put Hoyas
back atop Region 3AAAAAAA
By Jake Jennings
MDJ Sports Writer
First-year coach Josh Cassidy
did not sugarcoat the expectations
he has for the Harrison
football program.
He said he expects the most
out of, and is very critical of his
own team. To finish at the top of
Region 3AAAAAAA, the Hoyas
will have to limit mistakes and
commit to matching the expectations
of their new coach.
“They are committed,” Cassidy
said. “They’re committed to this
program, they’re committed to
one another and committed to
the coaches. I think overall that
is our greatest strength.”
Cassidy is no stranger to the goals
and values at Harrison. He was the
assistant head coach, with attention
to the defense, for the Hoyas
since arriving with former coach
Matt Dickmann in 2013. Now, it
is his turn to take the reins.
Departing from the roster are
talented players, including leading
passer Tripp Richardson, leading
rusher Jay Ziglor (Vanderbilt) and
leading pass catcher Marques Owens
(Bucknell) who all graduated.
At quarterback, Cassidy said he
has multiple options. Senior Jake
Walling, junior Brennan Brucato
and sophomore Braylan Ford
are all vying to be under center.
At running back the Hoyas
seem to be in good hands. Ziglor,
who rushed for 817 yards and 11
touchdowns last season, will be
replaced by Jared Montour who
rushed for 424 yards on half as
many carries. Akh Shabazz will
also take reps at tailback giving the
Hoyas plenty of depth in the run
game. Cassidy said he is confident
in his offensive line. Gavin Nagy,
Austin Novus and Nick Springer
are all returning starters.
Alongside talent the Hoyas will
also be working to replace leaders.
Marcus Bleazard, Harrison’s leading
tackler in 2020 with 121 total
tackles, will be missed as a vocal
leader on the defense. Cassidy said
they have a few guys that will need
to step up in that area whether
it’s vocally or leading by example.
“We have got some other guys
that are silent warriors,” Cassidy
said. “Guys like Nick Charles and
Trenton Hayberg don’t say much
but they do their job.”
Charles and Hayberg will lead
the defense while also trying to
replicate what Bleazard was able
to do last season.
Another hole for the Hoyas to
fill on the defensive side of the
ball will be in the secondary. The
team finished the 2020 season
without an interception, something
Cassidy said he wanted
his team to improve on this fall.
Nathan Vail is expected to be one
of the guys who steps up this season.
The senior, three-star prospect
according to the 247Sports composite,
has offers from Nebraska,
Duke and Georgia Tech. Having
him as a leader and a playmaker
should help bolster the pass defense.
Filling out the rest of the team
will be a flurry of sophomores Cassidy
said he is excited about. The
class may not have experience but
they will play a crucial role if the
program finds success this fall.
“We’ve got sophomores who are
going to have to play,” he said. “I’m
really excited about that class. They
are going to surprise some people.”
