Owls to experience competition
in every facet of fall season
By John Bednarowski

Coming off one of the weirdest
football seasons in college football
history, Kennesaw State is ready to
get back to playing championship
football, and having fun.
The Owls did neither during
their shortened spring season,
which consisted of five games from
February through April. They went
4-1, but dealing with a COVID-19
pandemic and the knowledge that
they never knew one day to the
next whether practice or a game
would happen, there was little, if
any, fun.
Coach Brian Bohannon said the
fall, and eventual, spring season
was the hardest he’s had to deal
with in his 25 years of coaching,
and now he is ready to get back to
coaching football.
“There are still guideline for
how we have to do things,” he
said. “but we are preparing for a
season that will return to being
somewhat normal.”
What awaits the team in the
fall of 2021? Lots of competition,
and not just from opponents.
“Everything is wide open,” Bohannon
said. “Every position is
open.
“I think what it will do is reenergize
everybody, and players
should really get back that chip
on the shoulder.”
For the second straight season
it was Monmouth, not KSU, that
won the Big South title, and in the
final year of the Owls being in the
Big South, one final conference
championship would make for a
good parting gift before the Owls
join the ASUN Conference next fall.
The first question is who will
be under center when the season
starts? Jonathan Murphy would
be the likely man to be the No. 1
after running for 174 yards and
two touchdowns, and throwing
for 275 yards and three scores
in three games in the spring, but
Bohannon is sticking to his plan.
“It’s wide open,” he said.
It means Xavier Shepherd will
get an equal look to wrestle the
job away from Murphy.
That will be the same calling
card for the remainder of the skill
positions — from running back to
wide receiver. It will also be a good
opportunity for Isaac Foster to reestablish
himself as an explosive
back. Known for breaking off long
runs in the running and return
game, Foster was kept in check
most of the spring.
While most spots on the team
are truly up for grabs, the offensive
line may not be one of them
as team returns four starters that
helped them lead the conference
in rushing.
The defensive line would be that
unit on the other side of the ball.
Bohannon said he expects it to be
strength of the team and a tablesetter.
If the line is able to contain
opponents early, it will allow an
inexperienced back seven.
“We feel like we have guys to
address those holes,” Bohannon
said. ‘I’m excited to see what they
can do.”
Those players include former
McEachern standout Xavier Reddick
at linebacker, who is in his second
season with the Owls, along with
defensive backs Java’n Singletary,
Jeremiah Compton and North Carolina
transfer, Welton Spottsville.
