North Cobb embracing high
expectations for 2021 season
By Christian Knox
MDJ Sports Writer
When Shane Queen arrived at
North Cobb before the 2006 season,
he took the Warriors to the
playoffs for the first time in four
years.
Last season, the Warriors capped
a 9-1 regular season by advancing
to the playoffs for the 11th time under
the veteran coach. In 15 years,
making the playoffs has gone from
the goal to the expectation.
“I’ve always told our kids we
want to be a program that the first
10 games are considered practice
games, and they get you lined up
for where you go in the playoffs,
and we hosted the first two games
in the playoffs and we got a great
draw,” Queen said. “When you
know it’s win or go home, you don’t
have to do a lot to get those kids
excited and ready to play football.”
Queen’s team got plenty of practice
for the postseason playing 10
teams in the regular season that
were coming off playoff berths the
previous season, including Buford
and a pair of 2019 state champions
in Marietta and Harrison. The
Warriors advanced to the second
round of the playoffs for the fourth
time in Queen’s tenure, but they
were eliminated by Lowndes at
home in a 21-13 defensive battle.
“Last year Lowndes didn’t cross
the 50 yard line until the last drive
of the game. We dominated the
game, but we made a couple of
mistakes and lost,” Queen said.
“We turned the ball over one time
and they punched the ball in, but
neither offense was productive that
night. Make no excuses, you know,
they outplayed us that night, but
at the same time I think we’re two
turnovers from possibly playing for
the state championship last year.”
Queen will have the offensive
firepower to make another playoff
run with four-star dual-threat
Malachi Singleton back to throw
to four-star Brookwood transfer
De’Nylon Morrisette, DJ Tyler,
Reggie Givhan and David Eziomume.
“If someone stacks the boxes,
we have the speed and a quarterback
that can throw the ball
down the field. At the same time,
if they try to double our receivers,
we’ve got a quarterback and
a running back (Ben Hall) that
can move the chains running the
football.”
Outside linebacker Josh Josephs,
who has offers to the likes
of Auburn, Tennessee, Michigan
and Miami, will be back after a 91
tackle, four interception and four
sack season to lead the defense.
Linebackers Grayson Hodges,
Jeremiah Jones, Kam Owens and
Zach White will be tasked with
replacing the departed Montrell
Jenkins and Jadyn Walker’s combined
199 tackles, nine interceptions
and six sacks.
In combination with Queen’s
winning culture, the returning
talent may be enough to make
a deeper run in the playoffs this
time around.
“Our kids have been very hungry
this offseason. They’ve worked
real hard and they’ve done a good
job, not only on the football field
and in the weight room, but also
in the classroom. We’ve had seven
straight years of over a 3.0 GPA.
I think our culture is very strong
right now.”
