Lassiter looking for continued
improvement in rebuild Year 3
By Adam Carrington
MDJ Sports Correspondent
It has been a tough rebuild for
Lassiter football with four combined
wins in the last three seasons.
The defense has played well enough
to stay in games but points have
eluded the Trojans on the offensive
side of the ball.
Lassiter scored a combined 89
points in its two dominant wins over
South Cobb and Osborne, but they
averaged just 10 points per game
the rest of the season, leading to a
2-8 record.
First-year offensive coordinator
Derek Cook may be the start of an
offensive turn around.
Cook helped steer neighboring
rival Kell High School to the state
playoffs in all nine seasons as head
coach, taking the Longhorns to the
final four twice. He spent the previous
two seasons as offensive coordinator
at McEachern and led the
Indians to the playoffs both seasons.
“Obviously, he’s experienced,”
Lassiter coach Sean Thom said. “His
track record speaks for itself. We’ll
have some stability on that side of
the football. I think he’s a good play
caller and will allow our team to be
in their most successful spot.”
Even though Lassiter will continue
to rebuild, expectations remain
the same with its primary goal of
making the state playoffs for the
first time since 2016.
The Trojans are leaning on sophomore
Bryson Harrison as their starting
quarterback after taking the reigns
as a freshman a year ago. He threw
for 468 yards and five touchdowns
in his inaugural season.
He had a productive summer and
put on 20 pounds of muscle. He’s
also throwing the ball and reading
defenses well, Thom said.
Lassiter plans to run the football
as a committee, rotating juniors
Jaheem Murray, Samuel Gadsden
and Evan Scherer. The trio
is inexperienced with only Murray
getting snaps at the position
last year.
Lassiter’s receiving corps is
more senior laden led by Danny
Curran and Parker Helmly. Curran
had six catches for 91 yards
last season.
The Trojans are expected to have
a veteran offensive line, even though
players are competing for three starting
positions. Junior Ethan MacKenny
is piling up offers from Division I
schools with fellow junior Alejandro
Gonzalez expected to start.
Defensively, Lassiter will line up
in a 3-4 with seniors John Vineyard
and Chase Anderson expected to play
up front. Senior linebackers Palmer
Bowling and Kaiser Khaja have had
productive summers at linebacker
with Curran, Helmly, Murray and
Scherer expected to contribute in
the secondary.
Junior kicker Drew Campbell
also returns to contribute on special
teams.
“Obviously, going into Year 3,
I feel like we are in a much better
position than we’ve been in
the previous two years,” Thom
said. “They’ve been competitive
in a lot of games, but you have
to do it for four quarters. We
will compete for four quarters
(this season) and let the chips
fall where they may.”
