Cherokee senior class poised
to make program history
By Michael Doti
Tribune Sports Writer
Cherokee finished in third place
in Region 5AAAAAAA, forcing
them to go on the road in the first
round of the playoffs.
The Warriors’ season came to
an end as they lost to North Gwinnett
29-16.
This season, the Warriors will
try to do something the program
has not done before — make the
playoffs four years in a row. They
would also like to host its first
playoff game since 2016 and
make a run toward a state title.
There are 27 seniors on Cherokee
this year who have been a part
of the playoff streak. Josh Shaw,
who’s entering his 10th season as
head coach, said it would be special
for these seniors to be the class
that went to the playoffs every year.
Shaw said the key is to strengthen
the offensive line and cornerbacks.
“I get back to how well our offensive
line gels. They’re replacing
three starters with guys that
haven’t had a lot of experience, so
that’s going to be a key and then,
how well we play defensively,”
Shaw said. “We lost two all-region
corners that were two-year starters,
and obviously if you make a
mistake at corner, you’re going to
give up a touchdown, so I’m really
concerned about us being able to
(cover), but hopefully we’ll be able
to find some guys to play corner.”
The Warriors have six rising
seniors at offensive line, including
Ryan Chandley and Ben Rice,
who earned all-region honors.
Riley Lyons and Austin Trimble
were the two all-region cornerbacks
Shaw mentioned. Keegan
Baker and Chase Goddard, who also
earned all-region honors could fill
the role. Ryan O’Keefe also led all returning
players on the team in passes
defensed, and added an interception.
Where the team is set is at quarterback.
A.J. Swann, who threw for
2,505 yards and 23 touchdowns
last season, is the reigning offensive
player of the year in the region.
Recruiting website 247 Sports
has the Maryland commitment as
the sixth highest ranked quarterback
recruit in Georgia and the
34th highest quarterback recruit
in the country.
Shaw said he will be one of the
best players to ever come out of
Cherokee County.
After catching 53 passes for 872
yards and seven touchdowns, Adarrius
Harshaw will be Swann’s go-to
receiver. Shaw said he is excited to
see guys behind Harshaw step up,
including Adam Fullen, who caught
three balls for 91 yards last season.
The defense returns two firstteam
all-region pass rushers in Tyler
Goddard and Toby Thompson.
Goddard was second on the team
with 92 tackles and added three
sacks, while Thompson finished
with 86 tackles. Shaw said he’s also
loved the adjustment from Kyan
Simmons, who will move from defensive
end to middle linebacker.
Special teams may give the Warriors
an advantage because of kicker
Joel Stahl.
“He’s one of the best (kickers) in
the state, and he’s going to be a tremendous
weapon,” Shaw said. “The
kid’s good from 50 yards out. Money.
And he could put every kickoff in the
end zone, which I think really helps
us defensively by backing teams up
making them start at the 20.”
