River Ridge back with hopes
of another deep playoff run
By Michael Doti
Tribune Sports Writer
River Ridge had the best season
in program history in 2020.
The Knights had an undefeated
regular season, finished 11-1 and
averaged 33 points per game, earning
coach Michael Collins Region
7AAAAAA Coach of the Year honors.
After they outlasted Kennesaw
Mountain in the first round of the
Class AAAAAA state playoffs, and
blew out Rome in Round 2, their
season came to an end with a loss
to eventual state runner-up Lee
County. In order to make it further
in the playoffs, Collins said
his team needs to improve on the
offensive and defensive lines.
“We’ve got a really good group
of guys coming into the offensive
line and they’ve been working extremely
hard, and they’re really
good unselfish guys that I think
are gonna play physical,” Collins
said. “Then a 180 would be our
defensive line because you got a
lot of guys returning in really good
groups, so I’m really excited about
our interior to play on both sides.”
The Knights have to replace
two offensive linemen, Telmo Yturralde
and Cam Cochran, who
were first team all-region players
a year ago. They still have experience
with two seniors set to start
in Jack Hall and Ryan Georges.
They also have a group of juniors
who could be starters.
While Collins said great things
about the offensive line, he said
he is anxious to see the pass rush.
“I’m really excited about those
guys having an opportunity to get
the quarterback, to (force him) to
not have a comfortable pocket,
and to have him make off-platform
throws,” he said.
It starts with senior Brian Bradley.
Last year he had 118 total tackles and
19 tackles for losses, which was the
most among any Cherokee County
player. He also recorded nine sacks.
All of this was enough to earn him
First Team Region 7AAAAAA honors.
Outside of Bradley, Collins said
he’s excited for Tristan Thompson
and Hunter Coleman, two other
seniors who he said he expects to
see more production from. He said
junior Brendan Dye, who can play
linebacker or defensive line, is their
utility player. Collins said he also
wants to rotate linemen Ethan Holland
and Ethan Anderson.
Most of the offense is returning
from last season including quarterback
Carson Lathem, who was
a first-team all-region player that
threw for almost 1,800 passing yards.
Running back Ahmere Morrsion
ran for 1,958 yards and caught another
220 as a junior. Those stats
helped him earn Region 7AAAAAA
Player of the Year honors.
The receiving corps is expected
to be led by junior Jackson Head.
Last year he had 657 receiving
yards and six touchdowns.
With the success the Knights
had last season, Collins said he
knows that means nothing. He
said he wants his players focused
on this season.
“We’re glad that people are continuously
telling us congratulations
on last year, but we need to press
mute and block out all that and
focus on getting better every day,
getting better drill to drill, and realize
that nothing that happened
last year can be used this year,”
Collins said.
