Creekview looks to return to
playoffs with youthful group
By Anna Snyder
Tribune Sports Writer
Coming off of his best season
at Creekview, coach Trevor
Williams is ready for his
team to continue building on
its success.
The Grizzlies finished last season
7-3 and second in Region
7AAAAAA. They made it to the
first round of state playoffs, where
they lost to Sprayberry.
This season, Williams said he is
preaching to his team about overcoming
adversity.
“We talked to our guys about
putting the ball down and being
able to handle adversity, regardless
of the situation,” he said. “Flush
it out, and play the next play.”
After losing a large senior class
to graduation, Williams said it is
important for the young members
of the team to step up.
“We’re losing a lot defensively
and up front on the offensive
line, so those guys have to grow
up quick,” he said. “We’re relying
on some young guys to
grow up and get some varsity
reps, and that’ll be the story of
the season: how quickly we’re
able to grow up.”
That doesn’t mean the team is
without talent.
On the offensive side, junior
Tyler Stevens, the team’s leading
rusher with 886 yards last season,
will return as a three-year starter
for the Grizzlies.
Seniors AJ Vaccaro and Tristan
Summers, who had a combined
406 yards last season, will both
be veteran wide receivers for
the Grizzlies.
On the defensive end, three-year
starter Cale Williams, who finished
last season with 87 tackles,
will be returning at safety. Ty Hubert
(OL) and Isaac Hubert (LB/
DE) will also play vital roles for
the defense.
After losing quarterback Brody
Rhodes, Williams is looking
at senior Mason Hicks to
fill his role.
“He’s kind of waited his turn,”
Williams said. “He played a little
bit as a sophomore and then had
some medical things last year,
but he’s stepped in and done a
really nice job for us.”
The Grizzlies also have freshman
Austin Guest at the quarterback
position.
Williams said he is hoping his
team will be able to make a run for
the region title, and he is looking
for the veteran players to lead the
team there.
“We’ve got a really tough region,”
he said. “Week in and
week out, I mean you’ve got
big time Power 5 D-I kids at a
number of different schools,
the coaching in this region is
unbelievable. It’s going to be a
dogfight every week.
“(The returning players) will
be big horses as we look to get
back into the playoffs and make
a run at the region title.”
Williams is expecting his team to
step up this year, and he believes
they can do so.
“It’s great effort, tremendous
attitude and a whole lot of mental
and physical toughness,”
Williams said. “That’s non-negotiable
here and our kids have
done a great job of buying into
that and that’s what we will expect
day in and day out.”
