Bacteriology Simulation Lab
Now your students can conduct real bacteriology labs—without real bacteria. Ideal
for middle-level students and for teachers lacking the facilities or the inclination to
work with bacteria—and without the hassles of ordering, culturing and incubating.
The simulated bacterial “cells” can be stored at room temperature, prepared when
you need them, and engineered to function just like the real thing. Students will
conduct the following experiments using standard microbiological techniques:
• Microscopic observation of bacterial morphology
• Smearing, heat fixing and Gram staining
• Biochemical assays for enzymatic activity
All of the exercises generate realistic results and prepare your students for more
advanced work.
Materials provided for 24 students working in pairs.

Microbe Hunting—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Reduce preparation time and provide a safe first microbiology experiment for your
students. Let students safely culture microbes they collect and test factors affecting
their growth. This kit contains the innovative 3M® Petrifilm™ plates. These ready-touse
paper-thin growth plates eliminate the need for sterilizing equipment and long
hours of pouring agar plates. You and your students are ready to hunt for microbes
the day the kit arrives.
Kit contains 50 Petrifilm plates. Includes directions for Petrifilm inoculation and
incubation as well as experimental suggestions.

What’s Living in YOUR
Shower? Student
Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
For many people, the thought of microorganisms all around us, all the time, is just
gross—but it is a fact of life! Introduce your students to the diverse and fascinating
world of environmental microbes “hiding in plain sight” with this hands-on culturing
activity. Students develop sterile technique skills as samples are collected from
different surfaces outside of class and cultured. The resulting microbial colonies
are then carefully observed and diagrammed to compare and contrast their growth
characteristics. Students discover that microbes, like people, come in all colors,
shapes and sizes and indeed have unique “personalities.”
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. An autoclave or pressure cooker is
required. The availability of dissecting microscopes will make it easier for students to
observe details in the growth patterns of the colonies.

Store Your Bacterial Cultures
Newly purchased cultures should be stored at room temperature in an upright position.
Most cultures will keep stored this way for 1–2 weeks without subculturing. Unique
storage requirements of some cultures will be provided with the cultures and special
directions should be followed.
Sam ’n Ella’s Café—
Simulated Food Poisoning
Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Although microorganisms live very comfortably on and/or in almost everything
imaginable, most people do not give that fact a second thought when they go out to
eat. Initiate a lively discussion about the safe handling of food after students “eat”
a buffet meal at Sam ’n Ella’s Café and participate in a true-to-life simulation. Once
food from each of six food categories has been selected by each student, the “food”
(water) on their plates (cups) is tested to determine who and how many people are
“sick.” Then students play the role of food detectives to determine which food is
contaminated and which “bacterium” may have caused the illnesses.
Complete for 30 students working individually. No living bacteria are used and no
real food poisoning will result from this activity. Testing the “food” for contaminants
involves detecting the presence of a base (the food “contaminant”) using a pH color
indicator.
