Electric Whirl
When brought near the dome of a Van de Graaff generator, the whirl spins rapidly in a
This illustrates an equal and opposite force reaction. Even if the whirl is given an initial
spin in the opposite direction, it will eventually stop, reverse, and spin in the direction
opposite to the points.

AP5987 Electric Whirl $27.36
Flying Ball and Silver Snake
The metalized ball, when first brought near the dome, is attracted by induction until
it touches. It is immediately charged to the full dome potential and repelled. The
ball then “floats” at a distance from the dome. The silver snake is also attracted by
induction, but as soon as it touches the dome, it too is repelled. The ball retains its
charge, causing the floating behavior. The “snake” ribbon does not retain its charge
and repeatedly strikes back at the dome.

AP5988 Flying Ball and Silver Snake $36.33
Leyden Jar
Charge up the Leyden jar with a Van de Graaff generator, Wimshurst machine or
electrophorus. The static-electric charge will last for hours. Use it later to charge up
an electroscope. Easily dis assemble the charged Leyden jar to show students that the
electricity is stored on the insulator and not the metal cups. Reassemble it and discover
that it still carries a charge. Informative instructions are provided.

Neon Wand
No plugs nor contact electrodes, yet it still “lights up” when held in a high-voltage
field! This wand is easier to handle than a large fluorescent lightbulb. 24 x 1 cm.
Includes background information on neon.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP5675 Neon Wand $16.77
Proof Plane
The proof plane is used to safely transfer electrostatic charge from one body to
another. The proof plane is 18 cm long with a sphere that is 3.5 cm in diameter.

Volta’s Hailstorm AP5993
When small bits of aluminum foil, pith, or vermiculite are placed in the cylinder and
the upper plate is connected to a Van de Graaff generator, the particles will bounce
rapidly throughout the chamber. The particles are first attracted to the upper plate,
but after touching it, are violently repelled downward where they are once again
repelled upward. The net result looks like a violent hailstorm.
The apparatus is 29 cm high with a 7.5-cm cylinder. It is on its own stand and
includes vermiculite and complete instructions.
