Pythagoras Cup
A wonderful practical joke that can be used to teach science over and over again.
Legend has it that Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras of Samos gave
this cup to his students when he served them all wine. Any students who chose to be
greedy and pour wine into their cups to a level higher than permitted would watch the
entire contents of the cups drain away! Have fun investigating the siphoning effect in
this memorable activity.

Perplex your students with this stunning activity! Legend has it that Greek philosopher
and mathematician Pythagoras of Samos gave this cup to his students when
he gave them all wine. Any students who chose to be greedy and pour wine into
their cups to a level higher than permitted would watch the entire contents of the
cups would drain away! Your students will never forget the simple siphoning effect
they create with a plastic cup, a plastic test tube and a straw. Inspire your students
to investigate the dramatic effects of Bernoulli’s principle with this intriguing demonstration
of pressure differentials.
Complete for 00 students working in pairs.

Water Hammer
Shake the Water Hammer up and down and an unexpected sound will be produced—
the “ping” of a hammer hitting a nail. Students will suspect that this is a trick, but
will be amazed to learn that it is only water causing the noise—no other objects are
used. The Water Hammer is a great device to introduce students to concepts such
as water pressure, fluid properties, and resonance. Instructions and background
information are provided.

Bottomless Bottle—Pascal’s
Law Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Use this old parlor trick to dramatically demonstrate Pascal’s law of equal pressure
and the incompressibility of fluids. Fill a glass bottle with water. Firmly grip the neck
of the bottle, give the top of the bottle a whack with a rubber mallet and—Pop! The
bottom of the bottle drops out. The small force applied to the water in the narrow neck
of the bottle becomes a much larger force on the bottle’s wider bottom—Pascal’s law in
action! The force is large enough to break the glass at the base of the bottle. Includes
instructions and enough glass bottles to perform the demonstration 12 times.
Note: Protective gloves are recommended when performing this demonstration and
are available separately.
