★MAINTENANCE: Algal cultures are shipped in clear, two- to eight-ounce polystyrene jars.
Immediately upon receipt, loosen caps and aerate cultures with clean pipet (included). Leave caps loosely
in place to prevent contamination, yet permit air exchange. Cultures should receive diffuse light and be
held in a temperature range of 18 to 22 °C. Maintain long-term cultures in clean culture dishes, flasks, or
battery jars using an appropriate medium. For lighting, use two 48-inch, 40-watt fluorescent bulbs (plant
grow-light or wide-spectrum) at a height of 12 to 18 inches. Begin with a light cycle of 16 hours on 8 hours
off and reduce to 12 hours on, 12 hours off after 7 to 10 days. Subculture to fresh media every 6 to 8 weeks.

Green Algae
This division includes both microscopic and macroscopic forms found in a remarkable
diversity of habitats. The green algae are very common in aquatic and terrestrial
environments and as endosymbionts among lichens, protozoans, and cnidaria. Food
is stored as starch and pigments in the division are chlorophylls a and b, carotenes,
and xanthophylls.
★MAINTENANCE: Maintain green algae in moderate to high light. Recommended culture media
are referenced for each species listed. Algae culture media (FB1820) is a Bristol's Modified Medium.

LM1041 Chlamydomonas. Also classified with the protozoa. Unicellular, biflagellate
organism. First in the Volvicine line of evolution to colonial organization and
multicellularity.*†

LM1042 100 27.57
LM1043 Chlorella. Small, spherical, single-celled algae. Common endosymbiont
with Hydra and Paramecium species. Popular food organism for aquatic
invertebrates.*†

LM1044 100 27.57
LM1051 Spirogyra. Filaments composed of cylindrical cells with large central
vacuoles and distinctive ribbon-like spiral chloroplasts. Reproduce sexually
by conjugation.†

LM1055 Volvox. Large, phototactic colonies of Chlamydomonas-like cells surrounded
by a common gelatinous matrix. Reproduce asexually via the development of
daughter colonies within the hollow sphere of the parent colony. Culture in
timothy hay infusion.

Diatoms
Diatoms possess chlorophylls a and c and accessory carotenoids that are responsible
for the characteristic coloration. Food is stored as the poly saccharide
chrysolaminarin. Diatoms can be either unicellular or chain-forming with siliceous
cell walls composed of two overlapping plates.
★MAINTENANCE: Culture diatoms under moderate to high light in Pringsheim’s Soil Water or
Knop’s solution (K0003).
Catalog No. Description Pkg. Size Price/Pkg.
LM1037 Diatoms. Mixed freshwater species. 30 $10.74
LM1038 100 33.59
Euglena
Euglenoids have a proteinaceous secondary cell covering called a pellicle, and most
species possess pronounced eyespots (stigma). Products of photosynthesis are
stored as the glucose polymer paramylon. Euglenoids have chlorophylls a and b.
★MAINTENANCE: Maintain Euglena under moderate light in Pringsheim’s Soil Water supplemented
with ¼ of a pea cotyledon or Algae Culture Medium (FB1820).

LM1039 Euglena. Extremely active organism moves by means of
single flagellum. Popular for behavioral studies involving
responses to light, temperature and pH.
