Cooking with Solar Energy—
Flinn STEM Design Challenge™
By: The Flinn Staff
Solar ovens are a fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly
method of using the Sun’s ultraviolet radiation to cook food.
Learn how solar ovens work and cook some yummy snacks
with energy from the Sun—no electricity or flames needed!
In the first part of this activity, students make a basic boxtype
solar oven and then investigate how high the internal
temperature reaches in a given amount of time. Once the
data are collected and analyzed, students then apply their
knowledge of science concepts, such as heat transfer, reflection, absorption and the
greenhouse effect to design and implement improvements for a more efficient oven.
Complete for eight student groups, including boxes. Thermometers are required
and available separately.

Build a Solar Cell—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
The energy crisis is real! Update
your curriculum today and
bring the latest technological
developments in solar energy
research into your classroom.
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs)
mimic the process that occurs in
photosynthesis to harvest sunlight and convert it to electricity. Students build a DSC
and learn about the principles behind its operation. Light striking the dye surface
is absorbed and promotes an electron to a photoexcited state. Electrons migrate
through the titanium oxide film and travel through the external circuit to the cathode.
The result—electricity from light!
Complete with enough materials to make four solar cells. A multimeter may be used
to measure the voltage of the solar cell and is available separately. Includes Flinn
Exclusive STEM Integration Guide.

Mini Solar Panels
Design your own solar energy experiments!
Durable, mini solar panels are
encapsulated in a plastic case that
will stand up to repeated student use.
Connect to various devices with 6" lead
wires. Each panel is 33/4" L x 21/2" W.

Solar-Powered Cars—
Flinn STEM Design Challenge™
By: The Flinn Staff
Students build their very own model cars that
run on energy from the sun! In the first part
of this activity, students learn how a solar car
works and build a model prototype. Next they
investigate different variables to determine their
effect on the car’s performance. Based on the
data collected and their observations, students
create an optimal design solution for a faster moving car.
Full-size kits are complete for eight student groups. Small-size kits are complete for
4 student groups. Refill kits contain materials only.

Photon Solar Racer
The Photon Solar Racer can be built in one
class period and raced in another. All that
is required for assembly are scissors and
a small screwdriver. The model will achieve
very fast speeds in bright sunlight. After
building the initial model, the key solar/
mechanical components can be used to power other cars of student design.
All materials to build one complete Photon Solar Racer are included.

AP6060 Photon Solar Racer $38.75
Simple Solar Science
When the photovoltaic cell is exposed to the Sun,
the motor spins and rotates the diffraction disk
creating a beautiful color display. Includes a sheet
with background information and activity ideas.
Disk is 4" dia., solar cell is 21⁄8", motor is 1" dia.

AP7820 Simple Solar Science $13.60
Solar Cell and Motor
Use the sun to power a motor. The energy conversion
from solar to electrical to mechanical energy
will be made concrete for students using this
simple kit. When the solar panel is placed outdoors
in bright sunlight, it powers the motor. What can
the motor power? Add fan blades or patterned
disks to emphasize speed and movement. The
24-page booklet Harness the Power of the Sun is
included. It contains illustrations and details about solar energy and its practical
applications to the world—present and future.

AP5106 Solar Cell and Motor $20.00
Solar Powered Car
Demonstrate how photovoltaic panels can
produce electrical energy. Car can be operated
two ways: by solar energy charging a AA battery
or direct solar energy to move a motor that in
turn moves the wheels to drive the car forward.
An auxiliary mode is also available to connect
the solar cell to other electrical devices. The car
can be used outside in the Sun and indoors with
a desk lamp.
