Gunshot Residue—
Forensics Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
When a gun is fired, a series of chemical reactions occurs and chemicals are quickly
dispersed into the surrounding environment. The chemicals are likely to be on the
gun, in the gun, on the shooter, in the air, on nearby objects and on objects struck by
the bullet. Learn the chemical tests used by forensic scientists as they track down
gunshot residue. Revealing these unseen telltale chemical residues can be very
significant at a crime scene and very motivating for your students.
Concepts: Firearm chemistry, nitrate testing, lead testing, false positive, false negative,
presumptive test.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: Cotton swabs, Beral-type pipets, diphenylamine solution,
sodium rhodizonate solution, lead nitrate solution, copper nitrate solution.

Scene—Forensic
Laboratory Kit
By: Gary Schiltz, Retired, Glenbard West H.S., Glen Ellyn, IL
Students will utilize simulated blood and blood typing sera to learn the principles
of blood typing procedures. They will extract and type blood from items found at a
mock crime scene and determine possible connections to potential suspects.

Bloodstain Pattern
Analysis—Forensic
Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
In this lab, simulated blood is used to collect data in bloodstain patterns. Students
drop simulated blood under controlled conditions in the laboratory. By controlling
the height and angle of each drop, students can analyze spatter patterns and use
the trends like a criminalist to analyze the origin of unknown bloodstains. Includes
simulated blood, crime scene unknowns, pipets, rulers, protractors, student laboratory
directions and teacher background information.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Presumptive Blood Test—
Forensic Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
For this activity, objects in your crime scene can be “seeded” to
provide positive color tests for “simulated blood” when sprayed
with the phenophthalein test solution. The test is fast and easy
and is thus ideal for use in the first moments at a crime scene.
Crime scene investigators like this test even if the results are
only “presumptive” and not considered hard proof. Comes
complete with teacher background and directions.

Forensic Glow—Blood
System Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
A chemiluminescent blood detection solution
similar to the type used by actual forensic scientists!
As the blood detection solution comes in
contact with simulated blood, a bright blue glow
appears. Includes detailed instructions and
enough materials to perform the activity over
50 times. No blood or blood products are used.
