Comprehensive kit consists of five hands-on experiments to explore the properties
of waves and sound.
• Using springs, students study longitudinal and transverse waves and learn about
frequency, amplitude and period.
• Observing the motion of three waves traveling at the same speed, students see
how wavelength and frequency are related.
• Using simulated point-source circles of different “wavelengths,” students investigate
constructive and destructive interference patterns.
• Experimenting with a telescoping resonance tube and tuning forks, students
determine the speed of sound in air.
• Using a variety of solid rods and tubes, students examine the variables that affect
resonance and rotate the “singing rod” to observe and understand the Doppler effect.
Easy-to-set-up lab stations allow groups to investigate specific aspects of waves
and sound then move on to the next station. Detailed instructions, Teacher Notes and
all the necessary materials are provided.
Full-size kits are complete for 30 students working in groups of 3. Small-size kits
are complete for 15 students working in groups of 3. Refill kits contain materials only.
