Mystery Nylon Factory
By: Jim and Julie Ealy, Retired, The Peddie School,
Hightstown, NJ
Two solutions are poured together in a beaker. A paper clip is lowered
into the solution. As the paper clip is withdrawn, a very long strand of
nylon is pulled from the beaker.
Concepts: Polymerization, organic chemistry.
Note: Perform this demonstration in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.
See free video at flinnsci.com.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP2088 Mystery Nylon Factory—Chemical Demonstration Kit $33.65
Super-Duper Polymer Gel
By: Walter Rohr, Retired, Eastchester H.S., Eastchester, NY
When a small amount of a white powder is sprinkled into a liquid and water is
added, it transforms into a thick, viscous gel. When poured back and forth between
two beakers, the gel begins to take on a life of its own and literally defies gravity by
crawling up and out of the beaker.
Concepts: Polymers, viscosity.
Note: Ethanol or methanol (25 mL per demo) and water are required and available
separately. See free video at flinnsci.com.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP4556 Super-Duper Polymer Gel—Chemical Demonstration Kit $15.48
Regis University, Denver, CO
Pour a rainbow of colors from beaker to beaker while students spontaneously erupt
in a chorus of ooohs and aaahs!
Concepts: Polymers, acid–base indicators, hydrogen bonding.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP5932 Pour a Rainbow—Chemical Demonstration Kit $30.85
The Wacky World of Superabsorbent Polymers
By: Steve Spangler, Regis University, Denver, CO
Pour distilled water into an “empty” cup and the water solidifies into a gel. In another
beaker add a small amount of powder, pour in distilled water and see an avalanche
of fresh powdered “snow.”
Concepts: Polymers, osmosis, cross-linking.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP6303 The Wacky World of Superabsorbent Polymers—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
$19.14

Polymers, Polymers, Polymers
By: The Flinn Staff
Introduce your students to the fascinating world of polymer chemistry by making
“slime,” polyurethane foam and nylon and by demonstrating the super waterabsorbent
material found in disposable diapers.
Concepts: Uses and formation of polymers, specifically “slime,” polyurethane foam,
nylon and sodium polyacrylate; crosslinking.
Note: Perform this demonstration in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP4426 Polymers, Polymers, Polymers—Chemical Demonstration Kit $64.55
Polyurethane Foam System
By: The Flinn Staff
Try this amazing demonstration! Simply mix two viscous liquids
together and watch as the mixture expands to about 30 times
its original volume. The result is a hardened, lightweight polyurethane
foam.
Concepts: Polymers, catalysis. See free video at flinnsci.com.
Catalog No. Description Size Price/Each

Pour a Rainbow
By: Steve Spangler,
Sodium Alginate Polymer
By: The Flinn Staff
Reacting sodium alginate solution with calcium or
copper ions produces a smooth, flexible, semisolid
substance that precipitates from water in the form
of—worms! Concepts: Polymers, polymer gels, crosslinking,
polysaccharides. See free video at flinnsci.com.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP7087 Sodium Alginate Polymer—Chemical Demonstration Kit $34.62
Fluorescent “Gummy Worm” Polymers
In this colorful demonstration, “gummy worm” polymers are
synthesized from sodium alginate and three different dyes
that fluoresce when exposed to ultraviolet light.
Concepts: Polymers, cross-linking, fluorescence.
Note: An ultraviolet lamp is required and available separately.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each

Chemical Demonstration Kit
$35.64
AP9030 Ultraviolet Lamp, 18" 50.63
Water Marbles
By: The Flinn Staff
Amaze your students by “floating” a steel sphere on “water.” Since the water marbles
have essentially the same refractive index as water, the steel sphere will appear to float
on the surface of the water.
Concepts: Superabsorbent polymers, index of refraction, discrepant event.
