360Science Momentum and Collisions
Check out Flinn’s new way to facilitate learning with the fully adaptable 360Science™ kits! These kits blend the
best of student-engaging digital content with easily adaptable hands-on labs for a uniquely comprehensive learning experience.
Happy/Sad Balls
The Happy/Sad balls are polymer balls that are ideal for collision studies.
The Happy ball stores very little energy in collisions and bounces
well. The Sad ball stores a lot of energy and doesn’t bounce. Besides
obvious collision activities try these:
1. Place them in water. Which floats—which sinks? Mass them and
calculate their densities.
2. Freeze the balls for at least an hour and then bounce them before
they warm up. (Amazing reversal.)
3. Place them in boiling water and then bounce them.
4. Which one is most efficient in knocking over objects?
5. Which polymer would you want in your tennis shoes? car bumpers?
rubber hammer?

Momentum and Collisions—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Which collision imparts more momentum—an object that hits a block of wood and
sticks to it or an object that bounces straight off? The answer will knock over one
of the blocks, not to mention your students! This simple but effective demonstration
uses two different types of rubber balls that swing into wooden blocks to distinguish
between elastic and inelastic collisions. One ball is very resilient, or bouncy, and will
rebound to its initial height or position when striking a surface. The other ball hardly
bounces at all as it absorbs all of the energy from a collision. Includes student worksheet
and comprehensive Teacher Notes with lab hints and teaching tips as well as
answers to discussion questions.

AP7399 Momentum and Collisions—Demonstration Kit $44.29
Happy/Sad Balls
One rubber ball will bounce very high; the other
rubber ball will hit the ground and not bounce.
They look the same, but they are different. Explore polymer chemistry with the
Happy/Sad Balls. One Happy and one Sad Ball are included in each package.

Collisions in One Dimension—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Crash one ball in a group of four balls and only one ball shoots out. Why don’t two
or three? Students learn the fundamentals of the laws of conservation of energy
and momentum with this hands-on collisions lab. Includes five steel ball bearings
of the same size and mass, a 75-cm long metal track, and complete instructions.
Complete for one student group. Classroom Set is complete for 8 student groups.

Basketball Blaster—
Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Place a marble on top of a basketball, drop them together, and the marble will shoot
up to the ceiling. In this unique hands-on laboratory activity, students perform this
double-ball drop and experiment with different ball combinations to determine which
arrangement creates the best “basketball blaster.” Students use the scientific method
to explore the laws of conservation of momentum and energy and identify key variables,
such as compression and mass, that affect the rebound height. The theoretical
height the top ball can reach is nine times the original drop height! Includes marbles,
mini basketballs, Ping Pong balls and rubber balls as well as student worksheets,
background information and complete instructions.
Full-size kits are complete for 30 students working in pairs. Small-size kits are
complete for 10 students in pairs. Refill kits contain materials only. All materials are
reusable. Meter sticks, support stands and clamps are required for each lab group
and available separately.
