Classic Lab Kits for AP® Biology
Scientific inquiry and reasoning are integrated in the revised AP® Biology curriculum
through a series of student-directed, inquiry-based laboratory investigations. As part
of the new course requirements, students must complete two inquiry labs for each
Big Idea (Evolution, Energy and Communications, Genetics and Information Transfer
and Interactions). The good news is that any labs that reinforce one of the Big Ideas
can be part of the inquiry investigations! As you update your laboratory syllabus to
align with the new AP® Biology curriculum framework, don’t abandon the classic labs

Use the following general strategy to help your students succeed as you transition
your current labs to the new student-directed format:
• Promote inquiry by doing the first part of the lab as an interactive or cooperative
demonstration or baseline experiment.
• Provide leading questions to support inquiry as students explore their understanding
of the initial observations. Let students’ observations and questions flow
naturally as they brainstorm, debate, evaluate, extrapolate, predict and propose
additional experiments to integrate their knowledge of the concepts and reasoning
with scientific evidence.
• After designing and carrying out their experiments, students interpret the
evidence—analyze, calculate, graph, extrapolate, explain and, above all,
communicate!
