Flinn Six-Gel
Electrophoresis Apparatus
Save time and money by running six gel electrophoresis
trays all at once! This oversized, seamless, injection-molded tank is safe
and easy to use. The UV transparent chamber is made from thick acrylic, making it
durable and leak-proof while the lid fits securely in place and can be easily removed.
The adjustable leveling feet allow the fluid level to be uniform and assure better
experimental results. Electrophoresis units feature recessed electrical wires and a
safety stop that prevents the gel from running when the cover is not securely fitted.
Each casting tray with embossed gel ruler has rubber end caps and multiple slots
for easy and versatile comb placement. The apparatus comes with six 7 × 7-cm gel
casting trays, six 6-tooth combs, one transparent cover and one injection-molded UV
transparent base. Requires a power supply such as FB0316.

Biotechnology Laboratory System
The electrophoresis chambers are double-gel units and feature state-of-the-art
design and safety features to prevent shocks. The variable voltage power supply can
easily run all three electrophoresis chambers simultaneously. The microcentrifuge
will allow you to spin down your samples and efficiently complete your pre-lab
preparation. The transluminator will help your students see the bands on their gels
to get the most from their experimental results. The complete system includes:
• 3 double-gel electrophoresis chambers • 1 variable voltage power supply
• 3 fixed volume micropipets, 25-μL • 1 white light transilluminator
• 1 agarose Gel Electrophoresis Lab • 1 microcentrifuge
Investigation including all of the necessary reagents

Although our electrophoresis equipment is designed to be as safe as possible, students
should be instructed to follow sensible precautions and procedures before and during
experiments.
Prior to beginning the separation, the power supply should be switched off and unplugged
and power leads disconnected, then proceed as follows:
• With the gel tray prepared and in place, position chamber lid.
• Connect power leads to power supply, being sure to match red (anode) to red, black
(cathode) to black.
• Plug power supply into outlet, check voltage setting and switch power supply to on.
When separation is judged to be complete, the procedure is reversed as follows:
• Switch power supply to off and then unplug from outlet.
• Disconnect leads from power supply.

Time Required for Electrophoresis
Time requirements for experiments requiring electrophoresis are variable.
Typically, gel preparation and setup requires 20 to 30 minutes—after which
gels may be stored, under buffer, for up to three days. Gel running times, for
standard gels, average two hours at 50 volts. Running times are longer at
lower voltage and shorter at higher voltage. Running times are also shorter if
using split trays. Gel staining requires approximately 30 minutes. Destaining
will be complete in 2–4 hours—although gels may remain in destaining solution
overnight if necessary.
