Ultrasonic Grating
Apparatus
The Ultrasonic Grating Apparatus is
both a unique demonstration of the
interaction of longitudinal sound
waves and transverse light waves
and also a method for the precise determination of the speed of sound in liquids.

Spectroscope, Advanced
Measure the angles of prisms using the Law of Reflection, demonstrate optics
phenomena with a diffraction grating or measure the wavelengths of monochromatic
light sources with this economical spectrometer. Reliable results will be
obtained while students work with this precise instrument.
Specifications:

AP5716 Spectroscope, Advanced $360.22
Project a Spectrum
Place two black sheets of construction
paper on an overhead projector stage,
forming a 2-cm-wide vertical slit in
the center. Place a piece of diffraction
grating film over the lens of the projector.
Two spectra will be projected
vertically to the left and right of the
beam of white light on the screen. If
spectra are not visible, rotate the diffraction grating 90 degrees.

LED Light Blocks
Affordable and effective! Quickly and easily
demonstrate reflection, refraction and color
mixing. Unique design includes adapters that fit
on the end of each block to create a thin light
beam that can be directed through optical blocks
to study reflection, refraction and focal length.
Arrange the beams to be parallel, diffused or convergent. Remove the adapters
to create wider beams of light to show color mixing—blue + green + red = white
light! A magnet is attached to the bottom so these versatile blocks can be used for
classroom demonstrations on a whiteboard. 41/2" x 11/4" x 3/4".

Measuring with Laser Light—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students use a laser pointer to measure
the width of three objects—fishing line,
copper wire and a strand of human hair. As
the laser light bends around each object,
students analyze the diffraction patterns
produced. Concepts such as wavelength,
diffraction and constructive and destructive
interference become clear. When
students compare the experimental values
with the accepted values, they will be astonished at the accuracy of this “high-tech”
method of measurement! Teacher Notes with sample data, extensive background
information and reproducible student worksheet are provided. Includes six laser
pointers, fishing line, copper wire and materials to make frames for the objects being
measured. Students supply their own hair.
Complete for 24 students working in groups of four.

AP7403 Measuring with Laser Light—Student Laboratory Kit $54.66
LED Array
The vertically-aligned set of LEDs, ranging from red to violet
and white, demonstrates the relationship between the energy
and intensity of light. Color and wavelengths are illustrated
on the LED Array for reference. The rotary switch allows for
illumination of the LEDs all at once or one at a time. Using a
spectrometer, the spectral lines of each LED can be investigated.
Includes power supply and activity guide.
