Make Your Own Soap—
Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Use the ancient craft of soap-making to show students a real-world application of
chemistry! The investigation begins with an introductory activity to make a bar of
soap using a combination of natural fat and oil that is heated with a sodium hydroxide
solution. The properties of the soap will then be investigated—its pH, texture
and emulsifying action. The results provide a model for guided-inquiry design of an
experiment to prepare soap with different oils or fats using a student-personalized
recipe.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Gluep Production—Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: Laura Trout
Lancaster Country Day School, Lancaster, PA
The Gluep Production Lab is a real-life, open-ended, discovery activity with an
element of corporate competition. Student research teams are challenged to use
the scientific method to improve a polymer recipe and make a bouncier Gluep
ball—all while staying on a fixed budget. Students design and conduct their own
mini-research project as they try to win the contract to manufacture Gluep. A fantastic
opportunity for students to learn about the scientific method and polymers while
having fun at the same time! Includes Teacher Notes, reproducible student handouts
and all necessary equipment and chemicals.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Includes Flinn Exclusive STEM
Integration Guide.

Paper-Making—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Learn the “science” behind making recycled paper. Every student will make his or her
own recycled pulp and press it into a 3" x 5" piece of paper. Once the paper is made,
students will test it for writeability and strength. The process utilized in this activity
simulates the major steps involved in the real manufacturing of recycled paper.
Includes deckle frames, screen filters, couching felts and linters. Recycled paper will
need to be provided locally.
Complete for eight student groups.

Oil Spill Containment—
Flinn STEM Design Challenge™
By: The Flinn Staff
Crude oil is a valued resource for transportation fuels, fuel oils for generating heat
and electricity, plastic production and countless synthetic materials. As useful as this
fossil fuel is, extracting it from the environment includes some risk, and disastrous oil
spills have occurred. In this activity, students learn how oil spills are contained and
remediated. Then students practice employing containment options on a small scale.
Using observations from introductory activity, students design a method to contain a
larger volume of oil and to minimize contamination of the ecosystem.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
