Factors Affecting Solubility—
Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
In this laboratory activity, students will investigate the effects of stirring, temperature,
surface area and the amount of solute already dissolved in solution on the
rate of dissolving. This activity works well as an open-ended, inquiry-based lab, but
may also be performed as a standard laboratory activity—instructions are included
for both formats. Includes reproducible student handouts, background information
and complete Teacher Notes with sample data and answers to questions, plus all
chemicals needed to perform the lab.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

It’s in Their Nature—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
“Oil and water do not mix.” This old saying is often used to explain why relationships
between opposites are difficult or almost impossible. In this experiment, students
trace this saying back to its source—the nature of oil and water, solutes and solvents,
and the interactions between them. By investigating the solubility patterns of ionic,
polar and nonpolar compounds in a variety of solvents students learn to classify
compounds and begin to understand the types of attractive forces that exist between
molecules. Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed background information
and Teacher Notes.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Perform this experiment in a fume hood
or well-ventilated lab.

Marbling Paper—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Break out your inner Picasso! In this “Marbling Paper” lab activity, students will apply
the concepts of intermolecular forces, surface tension, solubility and viscosity to
an age-old craft. Utilizing painters’ inks diluted with natural, nontoxic paint thinner,
students transfer unique ink patterns from the surface of water to paper and explore
how variables affect the results. Effective assessment questions allow students to
probe more deeply the simple adage that oil and water do not mix. An excellent
cross-curriculum activity that brings science and art concepts to life—show students
that chemistry is a creative science!
Complete for eight groups of students.

Precipitation Reactions
and Solubility Rules—
Super Value Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students perform 42 chemical reactions by combining sets of salt solutions. From
their observations, students generate lists of soluble and insoluble substances. By
analyzing patterns and making some generalizations, students develop solubility
rules. Detailed Teacher Notes and reproducible student handouts include easy-tofollow
lab instructions, data tables, helpful tips and sample data.
Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs. Fifteen
reusable 48-well reaction plates are recommended and available separately.
