In this hands-on activity, students will grow crystals of alum, chrome alum, copper
sulfate and nickel sulfate—each with its own distinct color and shape. Each crystal
is grown from a single seed crystal in a supersaturated solution. Watch students take
ownership of their crystal and nurture it as it grows over a period of several weeks.
This activity is a great way to introduce the concepts of saturation, supersaturation
and crystal structure. Includes thread, index cards, instructions and enough chemical
starting material to grow three of each crystal mentioned, for a total of 15 crystals.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Fifteen glass jars for growing crystals
are required and available separately.
