Five of the six Cherokee County teams found
themselves in search of a new starting quarterback
following the end of last season.
Big-time names, including the V anderbilt-bound
AJ Swann and Berry-bound Carson Lathem, are
gone, and it is time for a new breed of quarterbacks
to step into those voids.
At Cherokee and Creekview, the successors
to former starters Swann and Mason Hicks
were easy choices.
The Warriors’ new signal-caller, Tanner Savasir,

has already made an impression on coach Josh
Shaw, who witnessed first-hand his dedication
through self-run summer workouts with teammates.
“It is big shoes to fill after AJ, but I learned
a lot from him last year,” Savasir said. “Most
of the guys on our offense are pretty young. It
will be a good year for us to grow, and we have
worked really hard this summer.”
Savasir threw 11 passes last season, completing
seven for 76 yards and one touchdown. As
Cherokee made another state playoff appearance,
he soaked up knowledge from Swann, even
watching the former Warriors’ quarterback’s
interactions with the coaching staff.
Swann threw for 2,148 yards, 22 touchdowns
and nine interceptions in 2021.
Cherokee’s newest starting quarterback spent
a large portion of the offseason working on his
body. Shaw said Savasir threw extremely well
over the summer and has developed a good
chemistry with his receivers.
“I have gotten a lot stronger, physically,”
Savasir said. “Last year, I was pretty skinny
and weak, but in the weight room, I have gotten
strong. That has helped me throw further
and put more zip on my throws. I can throw
