Walton looks for another
deep postseason run
By Banji Bamidele
MDJ Sports Writer
Win the opener. Win the region.
Win the closer. These are the three
goals set for a Walton football team
which believes they can win it all.
“We have three goals, and if we
can accomplish those three, we’ll
be sitting in December in a place we
want to be at,” coach Daniel Brunner
said. “There’s only one team that’s
able to win the closing game, and
it takes a lot to get to that point of
the season.”
Last season, the Raiders reached
the semifinals of the Class AAAAAAA
state playoffs for the first time
since 2011. They fell to eventual
runner-up Milton and the Raiders
would have to reset in the
offseason.
With key seniors including Marcus
Allen, Sutton Smith and Angelo
Brown graduated, Brunner
said he believes in the “next man
up” philosophy as he heads into
his sixth season.
“We’re constantly trying to make
sure we’re building a bench and
building a backup group that can
step right in,” Brunner said. “We
graduated a lot of really good players
but we feel very strongly about
the guys that are gonna follow those
dudes and be able to fill those voids.”
O ne of the seniors was quarterback
and G eorgia Southern signee,
Z ak Rozsman. Replacing Rozsman
is junior quarterback Jeremy
Hecklinski who in the state playoffs
filled in for an injured Rozsman and
went on a tear throwing for 1,803
yards and 15 touchdowns.
“I think we got a great quarterback,
he may be one of the best
quarterbacks in the state, which
is always gonna help you win ball
games,” Brunner said.
The Raiders will have to replace
the production of Sutton Smith who
rushed for 788 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Braylen Stokes ran for 46 1
yards and four touchdowns. He was
the team’s second leading rusher
last season.
Junior MaK ari Bodiford, a
McEachern transfer, rushed for
712 yards and 12 touchdowns for
the Indians last season, and will
pair with Stokes in the backfield
and also the passing game.
Bodiford is among several other
transfers who are looking for an opportunity
to produce for the Raiders.
“I’m pretty fired up about those
guys that have come over here and
bought right into our culture and what
we’re trying to do here,” Brunner said.
The defensive side of the ball
includes many returning starters
such as, leading tackler and three
star linebacker Ashton Woods.
Last season, Woods had 104 tackles
and three interceptions. O utside
linebacker Wendell G regory
will pair with Woods as the leaders
on the defense.
“I think we’ve got good leadership
and it’s not just necessarily senior
leadership, it’s leadership from within
our guys,” Brunner said. “We’ve
got a lot of guys that are competitors,
and I think the biggest strength that
we’ve got is that we’ve got a collective
group of guys that wanna compete,
and ultimately that’s what you
gotta have on Friday.”
The Raiders are taking it a one
day at a time as they are rebuilding
for a deep playoff run.
“It’s gonna be a challenge in
itself to win the region,” Brunner
said. “Then obviously to get
to that closing game, you got to
play five games in the playoffs,
which is a tough deal to do. We’re
setting out to go do it this year,
and our kids are moving in that
direction right now.”
