Collins looking for a
collective approach
By Griffin Callaghan
gcallaghan@cherokeetribune.com
River Ridge football is in pursuit
of a third straight winning season,
something that hasn’t been done in
the program’s 13-year run.
Coach Mike Collins has already
led the K nights’ most successful
span, but unlike the last few seasons,
they are lacking some of the
big-name talents like Amehre Morrison
and Brian Bradley.
It has not phased Collins, though,
as he is prepared for a collective
effort in 2022.
“We have a good nucleus of young
guys with a lot of talent,” Collins
said. “They may not have a lot of
experience, necessarily, but this is
a talented group of guys that have
been playing together for quite a
while. It will be more collective
than in the past.”
River Ridge went 6 -4 last season,
narrowly missing the playoffs
at 3-4 in Region 7AAAAAA.
With both the quarterback and
running back positions changing
hands in 2022, more pressure is
going to fall on the K nights’ defense
to keep games tight.
The River Ridge defense was vital
on multiple occasions last season,
including the hard-fought, 16 -14
region win at Sequoyah in game
eight. Despite players moving on,
Collins said he likes his chances
with the returning talent.
Among the top returning talent
are seniors MJ Ayers ( one interception
2021) , Brendon Dye (43
tackles, four tackles-for-loss) and
Ethan Holland (four tackles for
loss, one sack).
“We want to try and make defense
a big part of our culture,” Collins
said. “We want to be known for it.
With the new guys coming in on our
D-line, no names are the big-time
college prospects like Brian was,
but collectively, they are a really
good, athletic unit.”
The K nights showed potential
with the 4-0 start last season. Even
in losses to Creekview and Johns
Creek, River Ridge took leads into
halftime. Collins said his team’s
2021 record was still something to
be proud of without the playoffs.
“I do not feel like there was anything
to hold our heads about at
all,” he said. “That was still a good
year. For us, it is not about proving
anything. It is about going out in
2022 and knowing it is a different
year with a different group of guys.”
River Ridge starts the year with
a rather forgiving schedule. Two
of its first three opponents, Hillgrove
and Sprayberry, were under
the .500 mark in 2021. It begins
Region 6 AAAAAA play with three
Cherokee County teams: Woodstock,
Sequoyah and Creekview,
respectively.
The K nights head into the year
with their heart and soul, Jackson
Head, leading the offense again as
a senior. Head posted 69 5 yards
and 10 touchdowns last season on
47 receptions.
River Ridge must replace its top
three rushers from last season,
including Morrison, who is gearing
up for his first go-around with
Southeast Missouri State.
Junior quarterback Isaiah Coughlin
( 22 tackles, 30 rushing yards
in 2021) could make an impact
in the run game as the K nights go
into the season with both Coughlin
and sophomore Ethan Spector
handling the position.
Collins is confident in River Ridge’s
potential. He believes this team
has enough talent to compete for a
playoff spot and continue to build
on the most successful stretch in
program history.
