Seniors lead Mustangs
back to Class AAAAAAA
By Charles Burney
MDJ Sports Writer
Three years ago, K ennesaw Mountain
was searching for any victory
it could find.
That’s not the case anymore,
and opponents know it.
Since then, the Mustangs have
dedicated themselves to reaching
new heights within the program.
They won the 2021 Region
6 AAAAAA championship with a
9 -1 record. They hosted and won
a playoff game. Both were program
firsts.
Now, they will have to try to
do the same in Class AAAAAAA,
as the program was moved up to
the highest classification when the
G eorgia High School Association
did its region realignment for the
2022-23 and 2023-24 school years.
The new Region 5AAAAAAA will
include four other Cobb County
schools in North Cobb and Walton,
along with former Region 6 AAAAAA
foes O sborne and Wheeler.
“G oing up into (Class) AAAAAAA
we’re still going to play good competition,
j ust like we did the last
two years,” coach Caleb Carmean
said. “I think the difference is going
to be that you’ve got to have
depth. You got to have the numbers,
your second string guys have
got to be, you know, ready to roll
and be competitors, too.”
Carmean said the team isn’t
concerned with looking back on
last year’s successes. Instead, the
2022 Mustangs are focused on the
season ahead.
“The success of the 2021 season
has nothing to do with the 2022
season,” he said. “The importance
of winning in the 2022 season is
solely because it is the season we
are in. And that is the focus.”
K ennesaw Mountain will have
30 seniors this season. Q uarterback
Cayman Prangley is returning
for his fourth season as the Mustangs’
starter. He threw for 1,882
yards last year, and he had a 24-
to-4 touchdown pass-to-interception
ratio while also rushing for
277 yards and seven touchdowns.
He finished top-7 in the county
in passing. He said the team has
high expectations for this season.
“We have very high expectations
right now,” Prangley said. “We’ve
been putting in a lot of work over
summer. And our team is just really
coming together and we have
a lot of people to prove wrong.”
Prangley is joined by other fouryear
starters in linebackers Ethan
V oltaire and Evan Duke, tight end
Earl K yle and center Conner Lew.
In 2021, Duke had 75 tackles and
two interceptions. V oltaire added
9 2 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Lew is a
four-star recruit with offers from
G eorgia, Clemson, Auburn and
K entucky.
The rest of the key offensive
starters include senior wide receivers
Jailen Taylor and threestar
recruit Cayden Lee.
O ther key members on defense
are defensive backs Michael Bell
and Tulsa commit Jaylen Moson
, as well as linebacker Hayden
McDougal.
There will be a running back
by committee including Bryan
Simpkins, Josiah Abrams, Amaree
Hayes and Ryan Ford. Last season
the team combined for 1,66 2
rushing yards and 22 touchdowns.
“We shocked a lot of people
last year and now that we’re in
Class AAAAAAA I think we have
a chance to shock a lot more people,”
Lew said.
