Ely era begins with new
offense at Mount Paran
By Stuart Steele
MDJ Sports Writer
Mount Paran Christian made
the playoffs for the ninth straight
year in 2021. The Eagles bounced
back from 2020’s 1-7 finish to
go 6 -5, good for second in Region
7A Private.
This year has been one of
transition for the program, as
longtime coach Mitch Jordan
stepped down in April to focus
on his role as athletic director
for the school. In his place will
be Matt Ely, who spent the last
six seasons as Jordan’s defensive
coordinator.
“It’s unique in the sense that
I always kind of in my head pictured
if and when I was blessed
enough to be a head football
coach it would be somewhere totally
new,” Ely said. “Becoming
the head football coach at a place
I’ve been for six years has been
such an awesome experience.”
Ely will retain the responsibility
of calling defensive plays
when the season begins, and
after experimenting with multiple
fronts in 2021 will return
primarily to an even look with
two high safeties this year.
The Eagles’ offense will look
different this season, as they
move away from the Wing-T
scheme. The team has two new
coaches serving as offensive
co-coordinators in Tyron K irkland
and Jimmy Pullia.
There will be a new face under
center leading the offense in 2022
as well. Junior Ryan Strickland
is poised to start for the Eagles
this season after spending much
of last season nursing a collarbone
injury.
Running back Nick G ermain
is aiming to have the best season
of his high school career as
the featured runner. G ermain
carried 51 times for 550 yards
and five touchdowns last season,
averaging 10.8 yards per
rush while splitting carries with
senior Jylan Thomas.
Many of the Eagles’ top players
will see significant playing time
on both sides of the ball, with
G ermain set to start at outside
linebacker on defense. Senior
Lincoln Broadnax, coming off
an eight sack season, will play
defensive end and tight end.
Linemen Carson Lake, Chris K alichak,
Matt K alichak will play
up front on offense and defense.
Young players will have to
step up in the back end of the
defense after the team lost seniors
Micah Lott and Remi Adams
and junior Trey Jackson,
who is out of eligibility.
“O ur secondary is going to
be really young in terms of
there’s gonna be a j unior and
two sophomores that are going
to start,” Ely said. “Those guys
have shown phenomenal promise
in our 7-on-7s and even in
our pass skelly periods we did
at this padded camp, so we’re
gonna have some young guys
show out especially in those
ninth and 10th grade levels.”
Mount Paran also finds itself
in a new region this season. It
moves from Region 7A Private
to Region 6 AA, with North Cobb
Christian, South Atlanta Therell,
Walker and Washington.
