Whitefield poised to
complete climb to top
By Matthew Welsh
MDJ Sports Writer
Whitefield Academy, led by a
talented trio in Caleb LaV allee, Ian
G effrard and Ayden Duncanson, is
looking to take the next step in its
progression toward region dominance.
The Wolfpack will do so in
a new-look Region 6 A.
Last season, Whitefield finished
6 -5 and in second-place in Region
2A Private, but coach Coleman
Joiner said he was proud of his
team’s finish. This year, Joiner
said the team is focused on acclimating
to a competitive standard
higher than that of years past.
“I think last season we really
emphasized, with a veteran group,
j ust learning how to compete and
compete with everybody,” Joiner
said. “We’ve kind of transitioned
from last year, into this year,
where we feel like our team culture
is set and our expectations
are where we want them to be.
Now we’re emphasizing finishing
those opportunities.”
In response to his challenge,
Joiner said this offseason has
been among the best in his time
at Whitefield, from a team improvement
standpoint. Specifically,
he said the team is focused on increasing
strength, and prioritizing
time in the weight room.
He said those reps will help
level the perceived on-field gap
in physicality between Whitefield
and its opponents.
“I think we’ve got guys that
played for us a year ago and aren’t
necessarily being replaced,
but they’re coming back different
kids,” Joiner said. “They’re bigger
and stronger and more confident
because of the work they put in.”
Whitefield boasts another lineup
studded with high school veterans.
LaV alle, who led the team with
69 5 yards rushing and 109 tackles, is
committed to North Carolina. G effrard
( Arkansas) anchors the offensive
and defensive lines. Duncanson,
who is all but certain to play at the
Division I level, returns to quarterback
and led the team with four interceptions.
Joiner said other upperclassmen
could play integral roles.
Tailback Merce Relaford could
support LaV allee who also splits
time in the backfield. Lineman
K yle Robertson, who finished
with 30 tackles last season, slots
in alongside G effrard on both
sides of the ball. And receiver
Johnathan Cassady should be
a serviceable target out wide
for Duncanson, having caught
17 passes last season.
“This senior class is going to
be a lot of guys that have played
a ton of varsity snaps since they
were freshman and sophomores,
and so that experience is going to
pay off,” Joiner said. “I think this
is the best collection of talent that
we’ve had since I’ve been here.”
Joiner said that with that consistency,
the team will continue
to operate offensive schemes similar
to last season, with the only
change being Duncanson penciled
at quarterback instead of
the graduated Cole Peterson. He
also said second-year defensive
coordinator Justin K ruger will
continue the team’s 3-4 look on
defense, anchored by G effrard
and LaV allee.
With the team’s playoff experience
from the 2021 season, Joiner
thinks his team is poised not only
to compete for region titles, but
to make a stronger push in the
state playoffs.
