For Kell, it ‘Doesn’t matter,
get better’ in ’22 season
By Matthew Welsh
MDJ Sports Writer
The K ell football program will
look drastically different from last
season’s 6 -5 team.
Bobby May, the former coach at
Westlake, who helped lead the Lions
to two region titles, has assumed head
coaching responsibilities.
With him, comes a comprehensive
wave of coaching turnover, featuring
10 new faces on the sideline.
May said it has taken time to settle
in with the new staff but that given
their work during the offseason,
the staff and players have jelled.
Notably, the Longhorns will have
new offensive and defensive coordinators.
Dan Sanso, four-year defensive
line coach at K eiser U niversity
will head the defense, while Steph
Brown will hold the co-offensive
coordinator spot alongside May.
With May at the helm, the coaches
implemented a revamped program
mantra: “Doesn’t matter, get
better,” or DMG B for short. He
said it applies to both failures and
successes on the field, emphasizing
daily improvement regardless
of stature. He said the team was
quick to adopt the call.
Amidst the turnover, May said he’ll
bring elements from Westlake to K ell
in an effort to establish offensive consistency,
while letting Sanso assume
the majority of responsibility in constructing
the defensive schemes.
“We may play a little bit different
from last year,” May said. “In
defense, we’re going to be a little
bit more of a four-man front, and
offensively it may be a little bit
similar, but I think we’ll be more
power run focused.”
At Westlake, May said his offense
primarily ran out of a spread formation,
focused on a down-field
passing game and aggressive play
style. May said he’s confident that
strategy will seamlessly transfer
to Cobb County due to K ell’s talent
level.
He highlighted junior transfer
quarterback Bryce Clavon, who
played for Dutchtown last year.
Clavon is also an accomplished
baseball prospect, graded the No.
4 overall player in the 2024 class
by Perfect G ame.
“He’s a talented player and athletic,
and can make all of the throws,
so we’re just looking for him to develop
as a leader and get to know
our kids a lot,” May said. “G etting
to know your receivers is really important
as a quarterback, so that’s
going to be the big thing.”
He is one of several quarterbacks
competing for the starting position,
including last season’s leading passer,
Davion Hampton, who is labeled
as an athlete and finished with 1,120
yards and 14 touchdowns.
May said he thinks the Longhorns’
versatility at the skill positions
give them a noticeable advantage
and extended depth at the
edges of the field.
Wide receiver Ayden Jackson,
who finished with 582 yards and
seven touchdowns, is returning for
the offense. Another senior athlete
in Ryan Barrett will be in the defensive
backfield, after finishing
2021 with three interceptions and
41 tackles. Senior linebacker Harry
Tucker, one year removed from a
32-tackle season, will also return.
May said he believes the team
should be adept in its upperclassmen
ranks, helping solidify the
coaching staff’s new offensive and
defensive philosophies. And with
increased interior production from
linemen like senior Josh Barker, who
finished with 81 tackles and eight
sacks in 2021, he thinks K ell can
witness a return to winning ways.
