Blue Devils starting
over at quarterback
By Thomas Ashworth
MDJ Sports Writer
Despite being at Marietta since
2016 and leading the Blue Devils to
a state championship in 2019 , coach
Richard Morgan will be faced with
an unfamiliar challenge this season.
“This is the first time we’re now starting
new with a quarterback,” Morgan
said. “It’s a little bit different, and we’ve
got to go at a little bit different pace to
make sure that they’re understanding
all the little intricacies. It’s okay, they’re
coming along and it’s fine, but it is a little
bit different at practice.”
Despite being new faces in the Marietta
system, both players have experience
in Cobb County. Daniel G ray (56 0
yards, 6 TD, 6 INT) came to Marietta
from Mount Paran Christian, while
Chase McCravy (6 72 yards, 4 TD, 6
INT) is coming in from Hillgrove.
Both players started for their teams
last season.
“We have two guys, we have Daniel
G ray and Chase McCravy,” Morgan said.
“Those two are splitting the reps and trying
to learn the system. They both bring
good things to the table, so it’s going to
be a constant every day battle to see.”
Last season, Marietta went 7-5, finishing
second in Region 3AAAAAAA
behind North Cobb. Despite being just
three years removed from their 2019
state championship, the Blue Devils
have yet to win a region championship
since 2005.
“We only have six starters returning
off of last year’s team,” Morgan said.
“There’s a lot of new faces people haven’t
seen before on Friday nights.
Some of them are seniors that are j ust
getting their first opportunity now.”
With a competition at quarterback,
Morgan said he will be turning to his
returning offensive starters to lead
the offense.
“O n the offensive side of the ball, returning
for us will be Christian (Mathis)
at receiver, Luke Morgan at receiver,
Jake Maggard at center and Melvin
Alexander in the backfield,” Morgan
said. “Cole Davis also returns as our
guard.”
Mathis caught 51 passes for 858
yards and 11 touchdowns, while Morgan
had 11 receptions for 147 yards
and two scores.
“Those are guys that we’re looking
to for that leadership to get those other
guys brought along and up to speed,”
Morgan said.
With the departures of wide receiver
K amryn Perry and tight end Camden
O verton, Morgan will turn to two
speedy offensive weapons to play at
slot receiver this season.
“Isaiah Sanders and Jeremiah Fredrick
are our two slot receivers,” Morgan
said. “They both were on the state
championship track team, so they bring
a lot of speed to those positions there.”
O n the defensive side of the ball,
Morgan brings back a talented pair of
cornerbacks in Devin Clark and Wisconsin
commit Jace Arnold.
“In the secondary is the most experience,”
Morgan said. “Jace (Arnold)
is back at corner for the third year in
a row, Devin Clark is back at the other
corner for the second year in a row.
They both have Division I scholarship
offers, so the experience at the corner
position is good.”
Along with Arnold and Clark, Morgan
has two more players he’ll look to
combine with the new faces that will
be showcased on Friday nights.
“Nacari Ashley brings back a lot of
experience at outside linebacker, he’s
got some Division I offers, and Broderick
Tommy is back on the defensive
line and he’s got Division I offers,”
Morgan said. “We feel like there’s
four guys on the defense that are solid,
Division I guys that can play. The
other seven guys are going to be the
new faces, but we’re pretty excited
about who those guys are.”
