Cardinals continue with
building a foundation
By Adam Carrington
MDJ Sports Correspondent
It may not show in the win-loss
column j ust yet, but O sborne is guaranteed
to be a more improved team
than it was a year ago — perhaps
much improved.
The program has grown and thrived
at a rapid pace since former Hillgrove
defensive coordinator Luqman
Salam took over as head coach prior
to last season.
Before Salam’s arrival, the Cardinals
have spent years to break their
losing mentality.
They have not had a winning
season since 199 4 the team had 12
coaches in 22 years. Also, its roster
numbers were below 30 at times
over the last decade.
Its 1-8 overall record last year was
identical to that of the 2020 campaign.
But thanks to its much-improved
defense, O sborne was competitive
in most of its games. The
Cardinals gave up just 25.4 points
a game last season after yielding as
many as 48.6 points per game two
years ago.
O sborne’s offense, which was
young last season, had trouble scoring
points. The Cardinals were shut
out five times and averaged just 8.4
points a game.
That is expected to change in Year
2 of Salam’s tenure.
Longtime Hillgrove coach Philip
Ironside is now on staff as O sborne’s
new offensive coordinator. Ironside
led the Hawks to four region titles in
his 14 seasons at Hillgrove, 11 trips
to the postseason and four appearances
in the state quarterfinals.
“He brings over 30 years of coaching
experience,” Salam said of Ironside.
“He brings a winning culture
and a winning mentality and j ust
some knowledge that is really hard
to find. I don’t care what school you
are at. I don’t care how good your
school is. When you get a coach
Ironside, a person of his caliber and
understanding of offensive football,
it’s going to make a tremendous
difference.”
What kind of offense will be instilled
for O sborne this season?
Salam said Ironside is known for
running a system that works. During
his early seasons at Hillgrove, the
Hawks ran the triple option. As the
talent started to change, Hillgrove
threw the ball more often.
Most of O sborne’s skill players
have been together for at least one
season and eager to take the next
step in 2022.
Junior Edward Burr (283 yards,
TD) returns at quarterback following
a productive offseason. O sborne
expects to have a thunder-lightning
backfield behind senior K halif Walters
( 305 yards, 3 TD) and sophomore
Emilio Cervantes. At receiver,
senior Josh Horton and junior
Tyree Cook return from last season.
Its defense will be older and mostly
intact as well.
The Cardinals will have Walters,
a second-team all-region defensive
back last year, at corner. Senior
G rant Williams, also a second-team
all-region player, is expected to lead
the defense at linebacker alongside
j unior Aidan Williams. Senior and
three-year starter Davonte Thomas
is back at defensive end.
