Sandt to continue
figt on sideines
By Griffin Callaghan
gcallaghan@cherokeetribune.com
Sequoyah is Sandt strong
in 2022.
While senior linebacker Carter
Sandt may not be making plays
on the field this season after
being diagnosed with cancer,
his impact is felt throughout
the Chiefs’ program.
Sandt is an inspiration for
his teammates and the community
as he fights through
treatment for Leukemia
and remains an important
part of Sequoyah football
in 2022.
“I still have my locker, my
j ersey and pads,” Sandt said.
“I can come to practices, and
I am going to come to all the
games. Even with the away
games, I can ride on the bus,
eat the food and be with the
team. I am still part of the
team, j ust not playing.”
Sandt has been in contact
with his teammates since his
diagnosis and beginning of
treatment. They welcomed
him with open arms once he
returned to the school.
“When I first came in after
treatment, they had a big welcome
home poster for me and
we all got pictures together,”
Sandt said. “It was really cool.
It is great, and it is also surreal,
j ust to be around these
guys that I grew up with since
I was a little kid.”
The No. 26 means something
special for Sequoyah football
this season. Players like Jackson
Hancock and Ben Sanders,
among many others, took to social
media to spread awareness
and support for their teammate,
helping # SandtStrong
populate timelines.
Sandt was Sequoyah’s best
linebacker last season, leading
the Chiefs by a significant
margin with 85 tackles.
He also posted seven tackles
for loss, four sacks, three
forced fumbles and three
interceptions.
Izaiah Sanders and Avery
Born were tied for second
on Sequoyah’s tackle list
with 6 1.
“We want him to be as
involved as he can possibly
be,” coach James Teter
said. “We still have his locker
with his name on it and
we want him to be a part
of this team.”
O n Twitter, the Chiefs’ football
page posted their meaning
for Sandt’s No. 26 , which
is all about unconditional love
while being patient through
challenging times and facing
life head-on.
“The support of the program,
and the support of the
community has been overwhelming,”
Sandt’s father,
K evin said. “This community
is special in that respect.
When somebody is in need,
they tend to pull together
and support.”
With all that support, and
the way his teammates have
responded, Sandt said it shows
he was more of a leader for this
team than he had thought. It
is a refreshing experience to
see the Chiefs’ faces light up
whenever he walks into the
building.
This year, he hopes to use
that leadership on the sideline,
where he can help develop
and encourage his teammates,
and friends.
Sandt has shown an incredible
amount of resiliency over
the last few months, which has
resonated with Teter and the
Sequoyah players. Sandt uses
the toughness he developed
on the football field to help
him succeed in his battle on
the sidelines.
“Football is more of a different
kind of grind,” Sandt
said. “Football has definitely
taught me how to roll with
the punches and keep moving
forward. You just have to get
back up.”
