Pebblebrook primed
to take next big step
By Banji Bamidele
MDJ Sports Writer
Since taking over in 2019 , Pebblebrook
coach Leroy Hood has
transformed the program to winning
ways in j ust three years. In
his first season heading the program,
the Falcons went 3-7, and
in 2020 the team improved to 6 -5.
Last season the Falcons won
their most games since 2006 –
nine – and advanced to the second
round of the Class AAAAAAA
state playoffs.
Heading into the 2022 season,
after graduating 20 seniors, Hood
has prioritized filling the holes in
key positions.
“O ne maj or hole would be the
offensive line,” he said. “We’re
very young in the offensive line
as well as the secondary. Through
the spring and summer, we’ve
been evaluating guys trying to
get a better idea of who could fill
those needs that we have on the
offensive line and the defensive
secondary.”
A position that Hood is confident
in is at quarterback and the
skill positions. Q uarterback Q amar
G rant threw for 2,443 yards and
30 touchdowns last season and
looks to perform even better as
he returns for his senior season.
Returning in the backfield is
gadget player Dwight Phillips Jr.,
a four-star recruit, who led the
team with 781 rushing yards and
seven touchdowns. He also played
at receiver and returner and had
1,210 all purpose yards.
“He’s vital to our offense and
he’s always one move away from
going 80, 9 0 yards,” Hood said.
“He’s a big play just waiting to
happen. If he stays healthy, I feel
like he’s gonna have an even better
year. I’m expecting for him to
make a huge jump going into this
j unior season.”
Craig Adams Jr., who committed
to South Carolina this summer,
returns at receiver after leading
the Falcons with 50 receptions
for 9 34 yards and 11 touchdowns
last season.
O n the defensive side, the Falcons
look toward returning leading
tacklers John Floyd Jr. and Jordan
Paul at the linebacker position.
Last season the duo combined for
155 tackles and Paul led the team
with seven sacks. Tyler Scott, an
Arkansas State commit, will add
a leadership factor from his safety
position.
“Jordan Paul as well as Tyler
Scott on the defensive side of the
ball, being that there are some of
our better kids we expect them to
be vocal and lead the team,” Hood
said. “The guys that have that notoriety,
as far as being able to go
play Division I ball, I need them
to be able to improve their leadership
skills as far as affecting
and influencing the whole team.”
The Pebblebrook squad is taking
it one game at a time, but still
have the ultimate target of a deep
playoff run.
“We go into every season with
goals. Last year, one of the goals
was to have a winning season
and we do take it one game at a
time. So having a winning season,
making the playoffs and getting
a first round win were the goals
last year,” Hood said. “This year
we expect to make the playoffs,
as well as make a deep run in the
playoffs. We’d like to at least see
Thanksgiving, and from there we
feel like it’s anybody’s championship
to win.”
